240DA Perf Tests 210 vs 250 HP- Freaky Close!

Well- for those of you who have followed Teamgomez' trials and tribulations over searching for the future "No Worries" and offered your thoughts on those matters foreign to me, I've got to tell you I'm somewhat puzzled by a nearly IDENTICAL performance curve on the 210 vs 250 hp models up to 4000 rpm.

I did the test myself yesterday on the 210 hp model and was less than impressed w/ top end. My offer on a 250 hp version (in better overall condition w/ hatch a/c, 1k audio enhancements, superior condition canvas) was accepted today and I asked him to run a 'virtual sea trial' for me b/f the surveyor shows up this week. To my amazement, the sub 4k rpm numbers are nearly identical! :smt017

The 4 barrel comes alive above 4k and the other difference is the out-of-the-hole time is about 3 sec less (guess this is where the torque is showing its stuff).

I'd been told by a few people that I'd probably not even notice the difference...never knew how close to the truth they were. I'll be glad to have the nearly extra 10 mph if I ever need it (can't have the little old lady on a waverunner dusting me...).

Here she sits in Eerie, PA...hopefully the survey comes back 5.0 and good to go! :smt038

Fascinating. Have you seen this boat for yourself? It would be a good idea to be there with the Surveyor.

Note: my survey was very beneficial, but a few things the guy said were inaccurate. These guys are human, just like you! Follow your instincts and you will do fine!

The results are very amazing. I do have a few comments.

1) Your chart has your data points evenly spaced. . .but the RPM steps are not even. Are you plotting using an excel XY plot or line plot?

2) The new boat. . .the curve of speed vs RPM turns UP at the top end. That simply seems wrong -> it should trail off! These engines aren't designed to run at WOT all the time. You will spend most of your time at 2800-3200 RPM (so expect to cruise at 24-28mph) Don't be disappointed if you find out you top out at UNDER 40 mph.

But if the boat is clean. . .good condition.. . .engine records look good. . . .go buy it!

BTW: The little old lady on the wave runner WILL dust you. My jetski will do 55 -> and it is 10 years old. New ones will have twice the horsepower and do 70. But the jetski's won't be passing you. They will hang out 100' behind you and be jumping your wake left and right.

BTW: The 240DA always seemed cramped to me. . but the only cure for that is to go bigger. And I for one would not want to trailer a bigger boat! I think you will love it!

What you are seeing is the translation from RPM's to Speed. What you won't see is the "power band", which until you reach that 4200+ RPM range which is where the HP is measured. I assume both are 5L and one is MPI o EFI and the other is carburated. The benefits you will find in the Fuel injected one is less GPH.....hey that extra bit of HP is great but less fuel use is the great bi-product. Either way hopefully you're getting wet real soon.

That's why I ordered my 250 with the 5.7 LX EFI (250 HP Fuel Injected). It wasn't an option, but when you order from the factory, you get what you want.

Turns out it has Stainless Steel risers or elbows - I can never remember.

Both engines have carbs- 210 hp 5.7L is 2bbl and the 250 hp LX is 4bbl. Owner who ran the test yesterday had no idea of my test numbers on the 210...

Plotted on xy excel chart- good catch on my 'chartsmanship'...will have to scrub that one before final submission :smt100

Survey scheduled for Friday or Monday as of now (only 1 guy in Eerie, PA). Keeping my fingers crossed...and leaving the Tacoma at home (even tho she's rated at 6500#) and borrowing my buddy's 3/4 ton F*** 4x4 diesel to bring her home. The Tacoma will get her to the slip and back to the house no problem (4 miles...no stoplites...downhill both ways...and did I mention the cool tailwind?).

You do realize that a 6500# tacoma is under-rated to pull a 5600# searay+1500# trailer + fuel+ water. . . . except if you are downhill both ways with no stop lights. :smt119

Good call on bringing a bigger truck with you :)

But don't let the buyer see the truck. It may make you seem too eager :smt101 . Even though you will be STRONGLY tempted to drag the boat home with you at all costs. . . .be fully prepared to leave it behind if there are issues.

BTW: If your tacoma proves not up to the task of the boat ramp, it will not be prohibitive to professionally haul the boat to your house. In NJ it costs me $6/foot, plus $25 for a ramp fee.

Ah. . .who are we kidding? May as well schedule a mechanic to work on the boat when you get home to fix anything that is wrong. . .because we both know that if the boat can float. . .its coming back with you!

In all seriousnes.. . .good luck on the deal! Here's to hoping for a creampuff!

Shoot- at this point- I'd take her home if she needed a periscope (kind of like having the beer goggles on in college again...this time the target is a bit different, tho). :smt018

Unfortunately, I've been to see and drive a handful so far and while it has been exceptionally difficult to walk away from some, I've done so based on just rotten condition/performance or the gut feel that is telling me to run, Forrest, run...

We'll see how the survey goes on Monday. I don't think I'll be able to get away from work to attend survey and if all comes back 5.0, I'll be driving to pick up a boat I've not yet seen in person!

Maybe I need to go in for a urinalysis....

Hmmm. I think you really, really want to be present in person for the survey. A survey is also a learning experience for YOU the new boat owner. If something comes up. .you can immediately ask the survey guy more detailed questions, and get a flavor of what the issues are.

Would love to...but....

I know I would learn a ton that **could** make an 8 hour drive worth the effort. Given my track record of folks who say, "She's a PEACH" and I arrive to see a rotten, insect ridden piece of fruit, I don't want to put myself in a position of dragging back a boat that needs stuff fixed just b/c I drove 8 hours to see her. Paints me into a corner if I'm there with 23k ready to leap into the owners mitts (Surveryor, "Do you smell that?". Me, "Don't worry about it. It's the smell of money burning a hole in my pocket"). I did have my brother stop by to see it on his way thru eerie on a x-country trip (really odd coincidence) and he said she looked like a 9/10. Let's hope the mechanicals are as solid.

My real excuse is not being able to get away from work to make the trek up there and back during a major program meeting with lots of folks flying in from round the country on your tax dollars...need to make hay while the sun shines...will hopefully get our business done and I'll be able to sneak away at the end of the week to bring her home. Stay tuned!
