240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

Thanks highlife34! That info helps me get organized. Weather has given us a nice week after several cold rainy weeks, so I will go down and unwrap everything tomorrow and start digging over the head for make and model. Maybe I can then download the proper manuals with use and maintenance instructions. And check out switches and fresh water plumbing to be sure it is drained. Guess for now I just really need to make sure it is ready for winter, with plans to get it all set up correctly in early spring.

Jeff,
Since you are talking about the new style 240SD which is lighter and smaller than the older style yes I would think you would easily hit the mid 50s. In my older/heaver 240 I could hit the low 50s with the 350 mag.

THANKS
We took it out today for a demo and cruise seems very stable and comfertable love the back deck area and the bow area seems much roomier than the other boats I have looked at ....i am down to 2 choices either this 2011 240sd or a new order bayliner 235 which seems like a lot of boat for the money but seems like toyota verses lexus both have the same parent company but for resale am i better with a 2 yr old sea ray with all the toys or the 2013 bayliner 235 once loaded the price is close....i know this is a SeaRay forum and I think I know the answer just need a shove

We have had our 240 for 4 years. Love Love Love this boat. The bayliners that I have been in were OK, but light. The heavier Sea Ray seems to handle choppy water better, ride smoother, and overall be better built. I don't see any reason that you would not be happy buying a good condition 2 year old boat. Ours is a 2006, and everybody that gets in in loves it, says it looks new.

Thanks well.... we pulled the trigger ....2011 240 sun deck with about 100hrs has the 350 mag and b3 prop very excited ...I think this the right way as you mentioned a much more solid boat and I won't be thinking I could of had a SR

Congratulations!!! Your going to love it come spring.

Two questions this time about my first winterizing attempt with '97 SD 240. I have found a total of five blue drain valves, and have drained the manifolds and the block (four valves pulled so far).
1. How in this model hull do you reach the blue drain valve on the water tube (Cool Fuel system model) heat exchanger? My arm can not reach it from the front of the engine well (by reaching down under unit), or from the port side of engine as it is jammed up against the wall of the well and I can't get down over the engine far enough to get in there?
2. Where is the fresh water tank and water pump located. It is not in sight in the storage closet under the sink. If it is buried in the wall of the hull below the external supply port, the area in there does not look large enough to hide a 20 gallon tank. Also did not spot an access panel if it s in there. I need to check this out to be sure it is drained.

Appreciate any tips from those who have owned this model.

Hello, I really like this grill set up. Being that the original post is several years old, can someone confirm this is a Magma grill? Looking on their site, I dont see the round style. Also, does anyone know where I can get the mount set up? Looks like there is both a rail clamp and extension arm.

Thanks!

Mounted ours on the bimini support by the sink. Even though you have to reach a little thru the support to use it I like the fact that it's over the water & not the boat should something drip. Can't leave it there while underway.

Ok, after some more research, I see these are listed on the Magma site. Just had to look around more. Any users care to comment on clean up and taking on/off boat? Where do you store it after packing up and heading to port?

Newbie here:

Getting ready for our second season with our 06 240 SD. We had a blast last year and racked up some hours. I recently found this forum and appreciate all the comments and ideas.

One item we were missing was the cooler rack/ rail system that the cooler rests on. Looking for opinions to see if it is worth getting replaced or if it better without. The floor mount is still there but the standard cooler base is wider than the width of the mount, so the cooler sits funny without the rail system.

Dealer wants $300 for the parts - I was also thinking about aftermarket or used if they are available.

Thoughts?

I had a 2002 240SD and I never used the intended cooler in ours. I had a cooler with a big loop handle on it which made it a lot easier to carry down to the dock. I just set it in there even though it didn't exactly fit right on the rails.

Thanks for feedback Dave!

I have a 240 sd based in Cape Town south Africa. Of late I am getting the smell of fumes in the hatch under the sink and in the storage area where the cooler box is. Any idea where this could be coming from?

Check exhaust manifolds and all other exhaust areas on engine in bilge. I had a small leak (bad seal) and my cabin CO2 detector kept going off. The fumes work their way up through the sides of the hull, build up, and escape wherever they can.

I have a 2004 Sundeck, and I would like to upgrade the 4 factory speakers. Anybody have success with any particular brand? Did it make a noticeable improvement over the factory units?

I tried some Kenwood coaxials, but didnt notice any difference. Went back to the factory Sony speakers, instead added an amplifier and Bazooka tube subwoofer. Sounds much better now.

I changed out the 4 stock clarion speakers and upgraded to JBL Marine Audio 6 1/2" 100w, added a 900 W JBL amp to run the 4 speakers and one 10" JBL sub. and a mono 500w to run the second 10" sub. and it rocks! i am running 2 batteries as well. <-- very important if you are using amplifiers in your boat to add batteries!

i have the subs mounted in a separate box that i can remove. when in use they are in the cubby hole under the console so i used regular 2 OHM JBL car subs. they were cheaper.

not sure what amp your boat has, so just changing the speakers may not be your answer. you did not specify if you were after just plain louder or you want clearer, better sounding all around audio. In that case you will need an amplifier as well.

Randmhall, what model amp did you buy and where did you mount it? Also, where do you put the sub when in use? Is the sub mounted somehow?

I do not think replacing the stock speakers alone with be much different. I was trying to avoid adding an amp to keep it simple, but I think that along with a sub to provide some low end will be the best result. Maybe a 3rd battery for the stereo alone would be wise as well.

I got a $100 amp from walmart and mounted it on the forward bulkhead under the helm by the ice chest. My head unit is in the same compartment so wiring was easy. Just used the pre-amp outs from the Clarion CMD4, then back to the factory speaker wiring. I put the Bazooka tube in the same spot, just forward of the ice chest. I did run a dedicated power wire to the battery since the amps potentially pulls a lot. That is the way the factory wiring diagram shows it. Total investment under $300, including heavy power wire and a fuze from auto zone. The stock sony speakers in my boat sound fine, they just need more power than the clarion delivers.

Keep it simple, it is a boat for jamming tunes while drinking beer. The expensive stuff is for the media room in the house.

Thank you Randmhall. Did you try the sub in any other locations? I know Sea Ray mounted the sub (maybe the amp too) in the port aft storage locker, close to the battery tray, in their stereo upgrade package. I think I like your position in the ice chest storage area better, as long as the sound is acceptable. Do you happen to have any pics of your install?

I agree with your statement, and yes, the expensive stuff is definitely in my basement theater!!

On mine the Amp was installed where Randmhall did his(under the helm/cooler area) You are correct about the Sub it is in the port aft locker. I used to have some pictures on the board how the amp was installed.
