240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

Now to the forums, We just purchased a 2006 240 SD, with the 350Mag Bravo3 It runs well, but is only doing 43 mph at 4800 rpm. Is that about right? I would have thought it would run a bit faster.

We were out yesterday...lake was pretty clear and I let it out a little. I wasn't paying that much attention but it seemed like we were closer to 50 at not quite WOT. I'll be out today and tomorrow and will check more closely for you...also, remember that GPS based speedometers are a lot more accurate.

You have a great boat! Hope you have lots of fun with it.

It should have a higher top end than that. First question.............is your speed a GPS measured speed or just from the speedometer? If it is not GPS then you really can't tell if your speed is correct or not because the speedometers are not very accurate. The next question is what is the pitch on your props? According to Sea Ray's prop chart they should be a 24 pitch? If you have a different pitch prop that may also explain it. And lastly did you trim your drive up when you tried out your top end? A 240SD requires the drive to be trimmed up just a bit to increase the speed. You can literally feel the boat smooth out and watch the speed pick up as you trim the drive.

FYI........My 5.0 240SD would run 48 mph WOT with two on board as measured by a hand held GPS.

That was SO much better a response than mine... +1

The only thing I would add is that the 350 doesn't add much top end speed to the 240SD over the 5.0, or so I'm told.

Dave S. pretty much hit the nail on the head, but you could never trust his speeds he keep quoting faster and faster speeds on his 240(Just kidding Dave)

Side note: you also want to make sure your trim tabs are all the way up to reach top end speed.

You guys are just jealous. :smt043:smt043

My 260DA on the other hand is quite a pig compared to the 240SD. Top speed is ony 38 mph and at that speed it drinks more than twice as much gas as my 240SD did.

Sniff.......sniff........I really miss my 240SD. :smt089 Too bad I couldn't afford to have both boats.

i've only been able to reach 39 mph on my new 240sd w/5.0 with just me on it. i played around with the trim buy couldn't muster anymore out of it. oh well.

i got stuck in some sand saturday and had to get towed out.after i was on my way, the motor seemed like it was running fine but my tempurature wasn't coming up.it only got to 125. so i get out on it sunday and take it for a short spin and it never got to 100 degrees. any ideas? i wouldv'e thought that it would be overheating from getting in the sand.

Can't much to what's been said and it's probably not an issue this time of year... but if you have a dirty bottom it will definately knock some top end off. I wet slipped mine one season and could sure tell when she got 'fouled'.

Bad thermostat? maybe coincidence..

With it still under warranty I would have it looked at ASAP. On my 350Mag I'm thinking I run some where around the 150 range most of the time.

Thanks for the speed answers. Yes it was trimmed up, but 43 mph was on the boat speedometer, not GPS. The with was also blowing 20-25 and the lake was whitecapping, so that may have had something to do with it. I'll retry on a calmer day. Hopefully with a borrowed GPS.

Ran my 240 SD with GPS to test top end speed on Saturday and got to 42MPH and then trimmed up and maxed out at 44MPH. Water was calm, two in boat, 3/4 gas, no water in tank and not much "gear". Maxed out at 4,800 to 5,000 RPM's. May of gotten to 45 but ran out of calm water.

My "comforatble" on plane cruise speed is 3,200 RPM.

You will find the best top end will be reach with just a slight chop on the water, trim tabs all the way up, out drive trim most of the way up to the sweet spot. I've heard the WOT should be right at 5000RPMs. on most setups for the 240SD.

Wow - I want one of these form my 240 so bad. Thanks for posting it. What a great idea!!!

I had considered looking into a patent. It was my idea but it was her hard work that created exactly what I wanted. So I don't think I have much right to the final product.
The tent was made by The Cover Girl (Tammy) phone #770-271-9093.For those of you that live in the area her street is across from Marine Max on Friendship Rd.The orignal price that I was quoted was low for the amount of labor & material involved to make the final product. So she wanted me to let others know that it would be around $1000 for the next one. When I started looking into having this made I estimated it would cost around $1000 so I got a really good deal having her make the first one. I am more than pleased with the final product and can not wait to use it.

I park in a covered slip, and while I want the boat covered, the snap covers are overkill. However, I have a tower, and just the plain Jane cover isn't going to do the trick. It looks like $550+ from the eBay suppliers. Have any of you 240SD owners used one of the sponsors (all other things being equal, I prefer to support the team but have no experience with any of them) for something like this, or have any other options that have worked for you?

Since it is torrential downpours for a few days in Atlanta, I have some time to kill figuring out the best option.

IMHO - Use the snap cover even in a cover slip. I do.

Well we finally got to test out the bow tent this past weekend. We spent Friday & Saturday night on the lake.I have to say the money we spent to have the tent made was worth it.We had plenty room inside the tent to sit up,move around and make a comfortable bed on top of the bow filler cushions. You just have to be carefull not to hit your head on the windshield getting in and out of the tent.I have a few extra lumps on my head :smt089 With the windows on the tent and the camper canvas open we had a nice breeze that kept the inside of the tent cool.I had planned on taking some pictures with tent and camper canvas on.But I forgot the camera:smt021

Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
Where did you camp on Lake Lanier?
