i purchased a used 2010 Sea Ray Sundancer 240. I have never owned a boat with a head. The brand is Dometic but I can’t find a model number. It looks like a Dometic 972 but that model shows that the seat comes off and so does the small tank under it to empty with a pour spot. My unit is mounted to the floor and has what I assume is a pump out line and a water line. Am I correct? Not exactly sure what I have. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like that year model had a variety of options including portable and pump out--can you post a picture? That might help folks give you specifics.

I will get pictures this weekend and post. Thanks for your reply.

You have a porta-potty with the pump-out option. It's simply a porta-potty with fittings for pump-out and a vent. It is still removable, like a typical porta-potty, if need be. That smaller line is the vent - not a water line. You still need to fill the top unit with fresh water just like you would a porta-potty. If you need more directions than this, look for the model that has "MSD" in the model number. There also might be info in your owner's manual - but I'm not positive on that. Either way, they're a dirt simple system.

So what model number do I have 972, 974? Seems inefficient to go to a marina pump station for 2 1/2 gallons. Can I retrofit with a spout and cap off the vent and pump out line?

Thanks for your help. I got zero documentation on the head or operation. The previous owner never used it.

I’m literally in the same boat, except a 2012 240. Zero manuals included and didn’t buy from a Sea Ray dealer so basically was handed the keys and sent on my way to figure things out. This thread answered some of my questions. Now to figure out how to manually empty it rather than pump it? I’ve been unable to find a model like mine on the Dometic site, also. While I’m here, would anyone know why my fresh water pump isn’t putting out water? I can hear the pump turn on, get a few trickles out of the sink....then nothing. This is all a bit overwhelming as a single girl, fist time owner.

I’m in the same boat you are. Your pump is either bad Im guessing or you have a valve somewhere not opened. Post pictures of your toilet and you may get help from others

Tony, you'll have to do a little research to figure out which model. I wouldn't be able to tell you off the top of my head and I don't want to do your homework for you :)

Edit: Looks like Beaches and I were typing at the same time - maybe she figure it out.

I just posted the link to what I believe to be our model toilet. I am not mechanically inclined, so will call Sea Ray dealer tomorrow to get some trouble shooting tips on the water pump. Hoping it is just a shut off valve from it being winterized.

Beaches... the most common things for water just trickling (other than making sure the tank has water in it, of course) is either a clogged filter screen (washable) at the pump or a clogged aerator at the faucet. Try another faucet, if you have it (stern locker?) to help narrow things down. There is no shut-off valve on your boat. You can search on this site, as well - this topic has come up many times.

For both of you - if you want to use your MSD as a regular porta-potty, look for a "cap" kit - essentially just two screw on caps (depending on the exact potty model). But be forewarned... the inside of the hose might be a bit nasty. I suggest you do a couple pump outs with water and a little bleach, first, then a few more with just water. FYI, you can also change out the lower, 2-1/2 gallon "holding tank" portion to a 5-gallon unit... although it will add height. It may just be easier to buy a new one - they are not expensive.

That’s it. Mine is the smaller one. Model 972. If you reach in the back of the toilet there is a latch to take the seat off. Under that in the right corner are a large black rubber pump out line and a white vent line. I want to retrofit that with a pour spout and just carry the bottom out and dump it on land. The small latch in front at the bottom of the unit will allow it to be removed from the boat. The parts required are number 5 and number 6 on the parts list. Pour spout ashy and pour spout cap.

I thought about the bigger tank but 5 gallons still not a lot. Like your idea of retrofit and just carry it off boat and dump it. Can I just cap the pump out and vent lines?

You'd be surprised how much it actually takes to fill it. But, yes - easiest thing to do is to jamb a plug (often referred to as a "bung") in there and secure with a hose clamp.

I think that sounds like the easiest bet. Although the lakes I use often have pumpout stations available, too, so I think I’ll just have to see how nasty it gets in between pump outs to see if I’m justified in making it portable to dump. So glad I saw this thread!

Thanks for your help. Guessing you will see myself and beaches with more posts. Never had a cruiser before. Had pontoons and open bows.
