Picked up a 2005 220 sundeck last year. Working on cleaning it up, I removed all of the interior upholstery and having it redone. During the removal process I realized that there are certain areas I don’t have access to!! So to remove them I cut the cushion and drilled them out. For reinstallation on a few spots I’m thinking of using a SS toggler with both and finish washers through the front. I will also use a threaded adapter to take up some space and not compress the new cushions too much. Not ideal and would rather not poke a hole through my new cushions. Anyone have any better ideas than surface mounting or have had the same issue?

Can you post some pictures of the areas you're conecerned about? There should be a way to do without damaging the new cushions (which could let water in, too).

This one on the starboard side that the transom door clips to is the worst. Can’t get to it from under the sink and I would need to remove the motor and water storage tank to climb back in there. Bad timing since I literally just put a new motor in last month and if I realized I would have done this prior to that.

Ooff ;)

Under the sink... is there are carpeted "wall" system? Those walls can be removed - typically secured with just a few screws. Feel for screw heads buried in the carpet.

Do you have a speaker (some 220SD do) behind the (opened) sink door? Remove speaker and try that way.

You could always cut a 6" hole in a convenient place and then fix with an $8 inspection plate. It can be painted to match the gel color.

Still another way is to "clip" the pad onto the wall. Use PVC or starboard board for the panel back, drainable foam and a mesh along the bottom edge of the panel so water simply drains out. The way the clips (search for garelick upholstery clip) work is you would cut a hole in the backer board that the clips would slide into. You literally just slide the panel into position. If you wanted, you could secure it with a screw through the bottom edge at an angle, but this isn't always needed.

There is carpet but the fiberglass comes down and sections it off. Also the speaker is in the sink area so that won’t work. I think I may go with the clip method and not put holes through the new cushions. Thank you!!

A 240 Sundeck has this access for that cushion. It’s behind the transom door and circled in blue.
Is there anything similar on your 220?

Another thing to consider, the through bolts on the side panels can only be replaced once the vinyl and foam are removed from the backboard. Is your re-upholsterer replacing the bolts when the cushions are recovered? I think they are 3/16” x 2” Phillips head screws secured with T-nuts, all stainless steel.

They can easily break during reinstallation and it’s too late at that point to replace them.

yes I provided all new bolts and Tee nuts. I found they were 10-24. I’m NOT looking forward to the install, just the outcome!!

Unfortunately no access door. I’m just going to use the SS hook and eye method and surface mount that one cushion. Just hope and pray due to the transom door clipping to it. I hope it doesn’t shift.

If there is a metal catch on that side panel for the transom door to clip onto when it’s opened, it should have screws that go right through the cushion and into the fiberglass.

There is a wood block attached to the cushion backing that the latch screws through and does not go all the way through to the fiberglass. The foam is cut out around it and goes over it but thin.

Given the small size of that panel, I'd also be quite tempted to give industrial velcro a shot (the kind with hard, plastic "teeth"). A few pieces of that should hold really well.
