Hey everyone,

Newby here with a 2012 205 Sport, 5.0 MPI Mercruiser. Had it out 5 or 6 times since we purchased it in July. 45 Hours on the clock when we got it. Nothing has been done to the engine since new with the exception of oil change. 37 gallon fuel tank, we went up river running 50 mph for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. Burned a half tank of gas according to the fuel gauge. So, @ 18 gallons to run 50 - 60 miles, about 3 miles per gallon.
Does that sound right to you? My last boat, of course no comparison, apples to oranges, was a Malibu Echelon LX with the 5.7 Mercruiser non fuel injected. Top speed with a power prop was about 47 mph. Weight, about 700 lbs less than the 205, 32 gallon tank. Never ran wide open for extended periods of time, maybe 42 mph cruising the same 50 - 60 miles, I calculated about 6 mpg.

Not complaining by no means, love, love, love the 205. Just trying to get a handle on my fuel consumption.
Did not buy it for gas mileage, bought it for fun and comfort in the rivers and lakes. Not wakeboarding or skiing any more, so it is just right.

I would expect to burn a lot of fuel running a 5.0 at over 4000 rpm. Mine sure does. There is a magic number of rpm and speed that will give you the best mileage. You can look it up on the Internet to get a start then play with it for your specific situation. Probably in the 3500 rpm range ( guessing) once on plane. Easier on your engine too. It will be a bit different for every boat and change with loaded weight and conditions.
