Went out and saw the first round of this event today. I took some photos with my iphone (sorry for the quality).

Couple of notes:
42.8 knots (as reported) in 12-15 knots of wind.
Just under 43 minutes for the 16 mile course.
Trial took place during a 1.3 knot flood.

I believe it's ok to post here as I do not consider these boats to be the typical "rag hauler". If not, oh well.

There were quite a few more larger boats out, but access (and therefore photos) was limited from time to time by the Coast Guard.

Nice shots. Not sure if I am going to go down to view any from my boat but who knows. I saw that only one boat went out today, imagine when the "real races" start. I expect the bay to be packed and crazy! I was in another crazy spot this weekend that you are familiar with (Mandeville). What great weather this weekend!

They should go back to the 12's....I lost all interest in the Americas Cup when they went to multi-hulls. It's just not the same....

Pretty cool stuff! Being down that far and now having a "winner take all" race? The Kiwi's must be scratching their heads. To think that just a few days ago they won the race they needed only to learn that they were too slow so it didn't count... OUCH!

We saw the smaller versions down here in SD bay last year. I was on the jetty and they went by at what looked like freeway speeds. I am also partial to the older mono hulls. It is a shame the sport has gotten so expensive that only a few nations can challenge for the cup. Thanks Larry E.

I respectfully disagree, I have attended several different Americas Cup events since the mid 80's. None of the previous events came close to this in terms of coverage and spectators. There will be more people on the shores of the bay tomorrow than there are at any other American sporting event (ie Super Bowl) Its a sight to see, the boats are far more entertaining and impressive than any of the mono hulls. Check out marinetraffic.com tomorrow during the race. The number of vessels in one spot is astounding.

How do you like us now, huh? I took this shot right before they crossed the finish line...

That's as I was in a free fall off of the side of the Bay Bridge!

The 2013 America's Cup was a blast. The boats and the racing format were both exciting. I saw five races from three different venues and had a great view each time, San Francisco rocks.
