Hello everyone. I am new to this and my first boat is a low hours 165 2011 Sea Ray 185 Sport. On the way home yesterday I started getting a beep about one a minute. I don't have any manuals to see what this is indicating. Gauges seemed normal except the oil pressure might of been high. it was about 60 psi. I don't know what is normal for this boat. Any help for this newbie is greatly appreciated!

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. A buddy who was out with me pointed out that a fluid was low. It was at the top right of the engine when looking at the stern from inside the boat. Looked like a brake fluid container on a car. He is a newbie as well but was told by his mechanic to pay attention to it and to keep fluid on board.

That's your outdrive oil reservoir and there is a level sensor (float switch) in there that will trigger an alarm. You may just be getting low enough that it is reading low once in a while when the boat lists or goes over a wave ect. Fill it to the correct level and see if that fixes it.

So first off - great little boat, these small SeaRay boats are just solid well built boats, and the Mercruiser 4.3 with an Alpha I Gen II outdrive has been around for decades and is pretty much bulletproof. A little care and maintenance and this boat will last many years.

1. Oil Pressure - 60lb running is about normal, will be lower at idle, but on the gauge anything between about 20 at idle and 80 running is in range. Cold engine will be a little higher, warm engine a little lower. Engine has an oil pressure switch that will sound an alarm and shutdown the engine on low oil pressure. It is important to use the correct oil in these engines, Mercruiser has their own branded oil (Quicksilver) that is an odd weight (25w40). Readily available at marine stores and WalMart.

2. Alarm / bottle on engine: That is the outdrive gearlube bottle, if it is low that is probably the alarm sounding. This is the oil in the outdrive - very important. It is a blue/green heavy synthetic oil - again Mercruiser makes their own brand of gear lube - Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. You change this as a part of regular maintenance - usually annually. Get a bottle of the lube and top it off - there is an add/full mark on the bottle, don't overfill it. It is not uncommon for your drive to use a little gear lube - I have to top mine off once or twice during the summer. Any more then there is a problem.

Keep a bottle of the gear lube and oil on board and check each before each use.

Google Mercruiser 4.3 Manual - you'll find several places to download it.

Thanks so much guys! I had a bad experience with an old four winns and that beeping made me say "here we go again"
