I'm away from my boat and my mechanic needs to know Sani gard filter replacement number - can anyone let me know quickly?

Does the system smell? After changing mine out a couple of times I now run a tube without filter and I have no smell. Once filter gets wet it smells.

If your mechanic is doing the maintenance currently, he can just look at the filter. The part number is on it. There are 2 different sizes. Just as FYI unless you are getting odor, many people would likely consider changing it yearly, just to change it, overkill. These regularly last 5+ years as long as they don't get wet from the tank being overfilled.

An easy way to re-use current filter is to purchase activated charcoal used in aquariam filters, proper size Furnco coupling, and Scott-brite pad. Cut flter in half, place Scott-brite pads in ends[cut to correct size], fill tube with charcoal, and re-connect with the coupling. Cost is $10-15. You will have enough chracoal left over to do again next year.

I refill mine as well, but I didn't see a need to have to cut it in half. I just pulled the foam out of the ends, shook all of the old carbon out, then refilled in with new activated carbon and stuffed some foam back in the ends.

Look in the vendor section here. There's a company that makes the "big orange" tube filter that's refillable. They sell the refill kit. The new big orange filter will cost you about what a new sanigard one does, but adds the benefit of having a suction break to prevent from collapsing the holding tank while at the pump out. It also comes with one refill which just cut in half the cost of a new filter... and you can buy extra refill packets to keep reusing the tube.

Last benefit is, they support the site!

I will try the big orange filter and give feedback.

Jack380ac from this site also makes a reuseable/refillable one. After some questions about whether it would fit in my application, he sent me one to take some photos with it installed on the top of my tank just like the original manufacturer filter. It worked just fine. I had already ordered a big orange filter, but I can say that I gave Jack's sample filter to a friend I boat with, and he's been very happy with it.

Here's a link to Jack and his filter. Yuo can find it in the boat products section here.

After looking at many other boats that did not have filters from the factory, we removed ours years ago. No smell at all, even my neighbors agree.

I know folks using the Big Orange and they are pleased. My filter got soaked and I needed a replacement quick. I bought a replacement filter from WM. I saved it. Now I cut them in half and rebuild like Diebroke and swap them out annually. The only difference is that I use a nylon knee high stocking to pre-package the charcoal.

My Regal's vent hose was about twice the diameter of a garden hose. I wish SR used this setup. I was able to use a dedicated piece of garden hose to rinse the tank like a Camco Tornado while pumping out. There was never a smell problem.

This goes both ways. My friend's Regal smelled like a sewage plant every time he flushed until he added a filter because there was not one factory installed. So they are not without purpose. I imangine using a bioactive treatment and pumping regularly would probably keep odor to a minimum. I would not want to spoil a fun raft-up.

If you need to replace the existing filter as the carbon has worn out, you have the option of recharging the filter using a kit available on ebay for $23.99. It includes all the proper fittings, activated carbon for this particular application, special foam baffles. The instructions are fantastic- the guy did a great job on them. All the parts you need are in one kit, so no hunting around for a hardware store, then finding the right kind of activated carbon, and the plastic fittings are oddball sizes. Search ebay for listing 300927338842 .

It's neat how you both live near each other and have the same usernames.

Good for you though, It seems most people are happy with your kit.

Great advice and feedback. I went ahead and ordered a big orange and will install it myself. I assume the install is straightforward but is there anything I should be aware of?

Exactly !! The Big Orange filter is also good: and Jack's filter kit is good as well. What impressed me about the Big Orange filter is that the guy obviously did his homework and the engineering is impressive. If you do not have a filter to start with, then the Big Orange filter is probably your best bet. A couple of warnings about refilling your own filter. First, the foam filter part must be chemical resistant: the Scotch Brite pad method has 2 drawbacks: it is too coarse of a filter, and some holding tank chemical vapors will attack it and desolve the Scotch Brite (been there, done that). Another is that there are hundreds of different formulations for the activated carbon: the fish tank stuff will work but not nearly as well as what Sanigard supplies, which is specifically formulated for vapor phase adsorbtion (ADSORBTION not absorbtion -its not the same thing). Fish tank carbon will work for 1 season, but vapor phase formula carbon will last many years if not wet contaminated. Another option is Calgon Centaur carbon: this has one huge advantage: you can back flush it with a garden hose and it will clean the carbon. It has two big disadvantages- it is designed for wet use not vapor phase, so its not nearly as effective as vapor phase carbon, and its horrendously expensive. One other drawback of vapor phase carbon is that it is rarely found in small amounts (less than 1 liter) suitable for this purpose: you usually have to buy it by the 200 lb drum or 1000 lb sack.

I just replaced my filter with the Big Orange filter and it literally took 5 minutes. One of the easiest jobs on the boat. It also looks like an easy carbon change out for next year.

That was my experience with both the big orange and Jack380ac's product when I installed it to take pics for him
