I bought a 2008 280 Sundander. Recently while flushing the motors after a day on the water, I notice a squeal in both motors when the throttle was raised above idle. The starboard was worse that the port, but both made the noise. Sounded to me like a pulley bearing, but I am not mechanically minded enough to be sure. Any ideas on what it could be?

Remove the serpentine belt and run the motors briefly to see if the squeal is still there.

Could be a pulley bearing on its way out or maybe just a loose belt slipping on the raw water pump.

Also, take a picture of the belt routing so you can reinstall it correctly.

Before you remove the belt, try the water test. With the engine running (and squealing) spray water on the longest stretch of belt. If the squeal goes away for a short time, the problem is likely a pulley bearing. If the water has no effect, the problem is likely the belt.

Another trick. Before you remove a belt (with the engine stopped) hold your phone near it while audio recording. Now "pluck" the belt like you would a guitar string. It will have a distinctive tone. Now when reinstalling the belt, you can "tune" it to the same tension as it was before you removed it just by matching the pluck tone to your recording.
