This past summer while enjoying my Searay I began to experience the dreaded 'delay' when shifting into forward... with reverse working as it should, Been reading the archives and such. My mechanic of many years .. after speaking with a Merc rep. wants to replace the clutch/gear set assembly. He states the clutch is slipping and the only recourse after ensuring the shift cable is okay is to replace the upper clutch unit.
The boat has 575 hours.

Comments?

Poor terminology on my part. Upper ... meaning the assembly is located in the upper portion of the drive. Sorry.

I have same problem with a 2008 Select 230. In shop now for upper gear set and lower cable......geez!

I have had the same "delay" off and on for a year now. When it is cold, it shifts very positive. When it warms up, 80% of the time there is some amount of delay-1-5 seconds maybe. It can make docking or putting it on the trailer challenging. Once the delay is over, it performs nothing short of perfect. I had the shift cable adjusted and that helped for a very short time. I had one mechanic look at it when it first started, and he said the upper gears and maybe the cone clutch needed replacing. I want to get it repaired, but I am not 100% sure of what it is. I have heard it mentioned that the shifter fork could be bent....not sure what to do just yet....

Just to update to original post. I forgot. Had the cone clutch and gear assembly replaced. About $1700 in parts and $390 labor. Been a 100 hours now and all is good. Zero delay in shift engaging. Makes docking a whole lot less stressful!
