Hello everyone. I am having a slight issue with my 185 sport. It has the 4.3L in it. This season so far been out 4 times. The 4th wasn't so great. Left the slip and everything was fine. Got about 5 to 6 miles down the water way and after coming down through a no wake area tried coming back up on the throttle and the boat sputtered and backfired. No power so I backed off and checked the gauges no issues. I opened the engine compartment and listened and looked. Everything was good. Tried to throttle up in neutral and same thing. Only way to climb in rpm's was to go back and forward on the throttle. If I tried to creep up it seemed to starve the engine and die. I finally worked it up to 2500 rpm and limped back in. Any Idea's to what to do. All the plugs are new and new distributor Cap. New fuel and oil change.

Check for water in fuel.

electric fuel pump could also be failing if it has one.. or bad connection to pump. That pump runs off oil pressure switch on port side of engine.

Have you had a chance to install the new fuel pump? I'm curious to see how that works out.

I have not the pump came today and go figure its raining today. I will be installing it tomorrow and will post all results on here. I hope to get good results please cross your fingers for me. Will post all steps start to finish.

It was raining down here in Fort Lauderdale as well, good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Ok. I have changed the fuel pump. Which after testing the old one at a auto shop the pump was fine. Checked all spark plugs good to go. So now I am on to a Carb rebuild kit which I picked up.

I replied to your carburetor rebuild question. But before you tear into the carburetor do two more things in addition to the above.

1. Check the fuel inlet filter - it's in the fuel line right where it connects to the carburetor.

2. It could be a stick float - on the mercarb remve the flame arrestor and spray carb cleaner all in the throat, but also in the ventury tube. This might clean out the float / bowl.

The float tends to get saturated and no longer floats in these carburetors, the kit will have a better design. Plus they do not handle ethanol well, so it might be time for a rebuild, but worth trying the above first.

Can't hurt to change out the fuel/water separator if you haven't done it recently. Not sure on the 2007, but on my 2005 it looked like a big oil filter.

The fuel / water filter was done first this year so she is new. As for the inlet from my fuel line to the carb I have removed it and the stainer is perfect. I have sprayed carb cleaner into the venturi and body not fix. So I am on to the carb rebuild.

Ok so new fuel water filter, new plugs, new oil, new fuel, new distor cap and rotor, carb rebuilt, now waiting on a fitting nut tomorrow to install a new pump and the final test will be tomorrow. So the test will be the new pump hoses and carb rebuild tomorrow.

Took the boat out Thursday Friday and ran it hard. Runs great and purring like a kitten carb kit and fuel pump was the fix.
