I am helping a friend with a new to him 2006 420 with Cummins diesels and smartcraft system. His starboard fuel gauge constantly reads empty and there is a fuel (gas pump icon) issue blinking on his smartcraft display. I am assuming he needs a new fuel sender. Can someone recommend what sender model to replace it with and where to look for the access to remove the old one?

I am not at a computer to give you model
Access is in the cupboard in the aft…there is an access cover on back wall of side overheads…. It’s not user friendly. I took the doors off

I have a 2005 320. Same, my starboard side reads empty. I just filled up, and still reads empty. I assumed it was the sending unit, and purchased a new one for $115 to only find out there's nothing wrong with the sending unit. I believe it's the gauge. To make sure, this weekend I'll switch gauges and see if the starboard side reads then.

I've already looked up the 4-1 gauge. The cheapest I can find (new) was $684 plus shipping. For $700, I'll go off my port side gauge if it's that what turns out to be.

Any salvage yards around?

How did you test the sending unit without the gauge working? I've replaced a few over the years and it has always been the sending unit that craps out...

That was easy. I removed the dash, and just disconnected the plugs, and switched them. I plugged my port fuel gauge into my starboard harness and the gauge read full. When I put the plugs back, it read empty. So the sending unit works properly, otherwise it wouldn't matter what gauge I used, it would've read empty.

You may have luck with www.gaugesaver.com as they refurb the lenses. Not sure if they can repair, but worth a shot. They may have a used one for you.

I'm not familiar with a 420, as I have a 320. I don't have a fault that pops up on my smartcraft. Switching the gauges/harness was easy. If switching does work, it's the gauge. If it doesn't then it's the sending unit. My port tank is tucked under, luckily it was my starboard tank also and that was east to get at.
Call MarineMax in Danvers MA. He was great. I gave him the year, make, model, and SS number of my boat, and he sent me a new sending unit.
