I am interested in a 2006 38 Sea Ray with the 8.1 HO engines. I spoke with my local Marine Max dealer and he informed me that the hard top fetcher slows the boat down 2-3 knots over the 04-05 380's. Has any owner of a 2006 380 feel that the performance in the mid range to upper range is insufficient because of the hard top.

I have the 38 DA 2007, and I cruise about 25 to 26 mph at about 3750 rpm. This seems to be my sweet spot after several long lake cruises over the years. As a comment to your question, my cruising partner in a 2000 380 is about 3400 rpm when I'm at 3750, and he has 7.4's. As your dealer mentioned, I'm told the hardtop and 8.1's add about 3000 or so pounds and the 21 degree deadrise versus 19.5 gives a little more drag. By the way, I struggle to get 0.7 mpg and he is closer to 0.8 mpg, he always take less gallons when we fill up together.

The 04 380DA is a larger boat than the 06 38DA. The 04 380DA is similar in size to the 07 40DA while the 06 38DA is similar in size to the 03 360DA.

The only 'Real' similarity between the older (99-2004) 380DA and then newer (05-?) 38/39DA is that they share the number 38 in their model name.

Yep, our 06 and 07 38's are the old 360. When I get in my friends 2000 380 (13'0" beam), I always want a 40 because the 13'2" beam over 2 feet in the salon is 26+ square feet, a lot in a boat. The extra 8" over all adds more overall.

I've got a 2006 38 DA with the 8.1 HOs. Her sweet spot is 3700 to 3800 rpms cruising at about 23 knots burning 36 gph. She's a great boat and will go through some serious stuff if you have to.
