I am in the process of closing on a 2006 340DA. During my research I came across the below blog entry on this site. I have not been able to find any other information about it on this forum or Google.

There was a safety advisory sent to dealers in August 2006 concerning shaft problems. It stated that dealers were to contact all owners of boats listed on the advisory list and install couplers on the shaft to prevent the shaft from possibly exiting the boat.Check with your dealer to see if your boat is on the list and see if these were installed. The safety advosory was not done on my boat and the shaft did break and exit the boat may miles offshore in deep water. We are currently in litigation with the dealer and the manufacturer. If you had your boat fixed by Searay (after you signed their waiver that our lawyer strongly advised us not to sign), it was not done out of "goodwill" as they liked to call it but to prevent litigation due to a mechanical issue.

My question is.... is this real? If so, where can I find more information about the advisory and more importantly, how can I tell if this repair has been done? Is it as simple as looking for the couplers on the shaft?

Thanks for any input.

Wow. I also own a 2006 340 and have never heard of this. But I did not buy mine brand new from a dealer either. It will be interesting to see what others can share.

Is there any obvious paper trail on the original dealer? Then it would be best to contact them to see if they have a record or if it is a concern. A surveyor ccould tell you if a shaft has been replaced. They look at the mounts and can tell.

How can a surveyor tell if a shaft is original or has been changed? It mounts on the cutlass bearing on the aft end and rests inside the coupler on the engine end so how can seeing the mounts tell you anything?
Changing a cutlass bearing or replacing a shaft seal are both maintenance items that may have been done multiple times on a boat and "the mounts" will look the same as if the shaft has been changed. Furthermore, replacing a shaft could be required for several reasons, not necessarily because it broke.

It sounds like the PO said there was some shaft work done under warranty, but I have not been able to find much more information than that.

Anybody else have some input?

If the shaft installed in the boat is straight and makes the prop go 'round, what difference does it make if it came from the factory or not? If you cannot find anything other than a single post form an unknown source, methinks you are overthinking this.
