I put a deposit on a 2006 340 Sundancer pending survey and sea trial. After the offer was accepted the broker informed me that the current owner let him know that the generator will start then shut down and throw a code. At this point I do not know what the code is but thought I would reach out to the knowledgeable membership of ClubSeaRay to see what some of the issues are that can cause this and possible associated costs.

Also, are there any other issues with this year and model that I should let my surveyor know about?

We really need to know what the code is... could be as simple as an impeller, or as bad as a locked rotor or failed SCR module.

Welcome to CSR!

I finally heard from the broker about the code the generator is throwing. It is UU which he thinks is low voltage caused by voltage regulator or faulty sensor.

Does this his sound Correct?

....or a weak battery....that caused mine to throw the famous UU code. Check your batterie(s).

My survey is this coming Friday and I will have them check that out. I have seen posts on the web that reference fouled plugs as a possible issue as well.

Surveyors don't usually diagnose issues. Their job is to find what works and what doesn't and make you aware of any defects in the vessel.

Don't try to fix something that isn't yours. Your best approach is to keep your mouth shut except to tell your surveyor that the generator isn't working, get the survey report then either accept the boat or reject it. In this case, the code could be about anything having to do with the back end from bad rectifiers, bad condensers, bad circuit boards or even shorted windings and that means anything from a cheap easy fix to a real expensive one. In cases like this, the best position to take is probably "I love the boat, the survey is done and shows some minor issues that I will handle after closing, but the generator doesn't work and I am not willing to repair the generator for the price we agreed to. We will either reject the boat or the seller can have the generator repaired."

We had a discussion a week or so ago about generator costs on 340DA's and the costs were anywhere from $7500 to $12,000, so this is something worth digging your heels in over.

Here is another point worth noting……..I find the timing of this whole generator fault thing to be suspect. You make an offer in good faith and that offer is accepted, then the broker calls you and tells you "by the way, the generator isn't working and throws codes". You had every right to recind your offer right then……..and you probably should have saying that when the seller resolves his problem call me back and if I haven't already found a boat, we'll talk again. A non-functioning major component should have been declared in the listing documents or at the least they should have been corrected and you should have been made aware of the generator problem when you first looked at the boat.

image.jpgThanks to everyone who responded. I was able to negotiate a significant price reduction to cover the issue with the generator. During the survey it would not even start so we assumed the worst. After taking ownership this week I changed the plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter and impeller and got it to run perfectly so that issue is behind me.

There are two more issues I have that have me stumped.

1. The float switch for the aft bilge pump is not getting power. Is there a fuse somewhere that I am missing.

2. The Northstar NS100 will just beep when you try and broadcast on channel 16. The others seem to work fine. Could this be a bad antenna? If so where is the black box located so I can try another one to see if that is the issue?

The problem with my VHF turned out to be a bad antenna which was an easy fix once I found the black box.

I have noticed a clicking sound coming from my starboard v drive only in forward gear. It gets loader as I apply throttle.

The fluid looks fine and the previous owner claimed the plugs were installed in August. Is there something else I can check to determine issue?

Congrats on the 340. We close tomorrow on an 06 340 here in Occoquan. Very nice boat.
