We are closing on a new to us 2006 290 Sundancer today. During the survey, it was noted that the stereo played in the salon, but not in the cockpit. Yesterday, during sea trial, I was able to get it to come on in the cockpit for a second, but I am not sure if it was something I did or if there is a short somewhere. The stereo appears to be the factory Clarion system with 6 disc changer and separate controls in the salon and at the helm, with the only exception from factory being a Polk Audio sub tucked into the gunwale behind where the salon door latches. When shutting the boat down after the sea trial, I pushed the button on the helm that turns on the speaker for the VHF radio intending to turn it off as it was lit up. It seemed like at the same instant, the stereo began playing in the cockpit. I pushed the button again and it seemed like at the same instant the stereo turned off in the cockpit. However, I wasn't able to get it turned back on. Does this button somehow change the speaker configuration for the cockpit? If not, is there some other control that does this? We had 3 people on the boat (me, my wife and the captain) at the time, so it is possible someone else pushed a switch somewhere. I'm just trying to figure out of we have an operator error/ training issue or if I need to bust out the multi-meter and start tracking down a short.

In many Sea rays there are switches somewhere by the cabin entrance, usually on a wall right by the steps. These switches allow you to mute either the cockpit or cabin. Not sure if this feature is on your model. Congrats and good luck!

Our previous boat was a 2006 290DA. Great boat! Congrats! No, there is not a factory switch to toggle the cockpit/cabin speakers on and off. I know personally because that was a reason I replaced the head unit and made each area its own dedicated zone. Now..this isnt saying that the PO didnt hook something up to do what you are thinking. I would start with looking at the wiring for the vhf and the head unit. Lastly, if you plan to replace the head unit the newer wired remotes dont use the same wiring, it needs to be replaced. However, Fusion has wireless remotes now that make everything so much easier. Take a look at those and good luck! I know that boat pretty well...feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thanks. It looks like it's time to dig out the multi-meter.

I had the same issue when I bought mine and it was a setting in the radio that turned off the cockpit speakers. Is it a Clarion head unit by chance? Please post the make/model of the head unit. I have the Clarion XMD-3 and if you have the same I can tell you what to check. I don't have the subwoofer option, but the low pass filter was on (or something like that). Also did you check the front/rear fade?

It is a Clarion head unit, but I don't know which model. We just got the boat home this afternoon and it's pouring rain now. I'll check in the morning. It would be awesome if it's something as simple as a fader setting.

Hopefully! I got lucky when I bought my boat. The surveyor found a ton of stuff wrong but most of it was electrical or settings related. In this case I thought all 4 cockpit speakers were toast. Turns out they were all brand new speakes under older grilles, and once I fixed the head unit setting, the tunes were on!

Congratulations… we loved our 290. Check this out, I recall this switch muted speakers but was not identified as pictured. Check out the 290 thread there’s a ton of great info. I would start by replacing all the light bulbs with LED’s (amazon or superbrightlights.com.
All the Best

i think I figured it out. The fader turns it on/off and I also found the mute button. The sub which I assume isn’t original isn’t functioning still and I’ve looked all over for controls or an amp that powers it with no success. I’ll probably have to pull it and check it out.

Hi, this is off thread. But did you sell a burgundy 290DA to a buyer in Connecticut? I bought one last year locally and it originally came from Maryland. If so, that would be a coincidence!

Hey Jim. Nope, we had a black one and sold it to a dock mates friend in MD. I think its up near Baltimore now.

Thanks, the seller of my boat picked it up in Annapolis so it was worth a shot. You're right, the '06 290DA is a great boat.

Back on thread, the seller replaced the original head unit with a cheap Pioneer car stereo. It works but I'm considering replacing with a Fusion unit. The original Clarion remote is still on the helm, from an earlier post it sounds like you've worked with these. Is there a remote that can drop in there?
