Considering buying a 2005 270 SLX, 62 hours on engine. Wanting some advice, pros cons. Asking price $50,000. Thanks for the help, new boater needing guidance.

I have no experience in owning one but I shopped one back in 2006 and absolutely loved it. Depending on options, it was almost double that price back then so you are doing well by avoiding that huge depreciation hit. I loved the deep cockpit, the high back seats, deep bow and quality, look and feel. Which engine package? I would think the 496 is best for it because its a big heavy boat. The arch is very classic if equipped. Loved the windlass option. I think that's a lot of boat for the money considering you should be able to negotiate down. Private seller? Condition? Lots of variables for overall value to determine if its a good price.

thanks for the advice, it does have the 496 merc 1. boat seems to be in good shape, dry storage since purchase.

We absolutely love the 270. Wish we had the arch, but at the time we bought our high and dry didn't have a place to store it without a folding arch. Aside from that, it is a great boat. Love the 496, the boat absolutely jumps out of the hole and is on plane almost instantly. And it is a good tow boat with the 496, skiers pop right up. The deep V and the steep entry angle of the bow handles big water well, and abslutely eats light chop. Lots of storage and room for a big crowd. Do your research on the price and buy it! Where do you plan on using it? Feel free to ask any questions you have about the boat. Good luck.

2005 with 62 hours??? Dry storage - yeah it's dry alright. I'm sure it's a damn fine boat. Just have the engine checked (seals, etc. etc) . I hate seeing engines that just haven't been run. They are built to be run.

An engine's sign of health is not necessarily low, low hours.

I was at my local dealer today and they have a new 2011 270 loaded up for $124,000!

Great boat. I have an '05 with an '08 hull. Some '05s and '06 270SLXs had a weakness in the hull that resulted in recurring cracks below the water line that allowed water to enter and soak the foam. Mine had that problem and SR stepped up and replaced the hull after a failed attempt to reinforce the hull w/ fiberglass laid into the keel beneath the ski locker. Ask if this particular '05 has had this problem. I would not buy a boat that has had the hull reinforcement treatment. Honestly, there were probably only a handful of boats affected by this problem. If this particular boat has not had a history of numerous and recurring cracks in the gel coat, especially below the waterline, go for it.

Hey Cotton post #7 may have become your best friend. I'd definitely tell the surveyor to study up on this particular SR issue before inspecting your boat. Then I'd send post#7 a gift certificate to the Outback if he finds stress crack. DQ if he doesn't.

This is why I love this forum!

Wow, what a great piece of information re the hull. It is a sad day when you don't learn something new. This site is a wealth of information to anyone looking for a new boat as well as those who presently own a "Ray".

I think you should have the survey and then buy the boat if it passes. Asl your surveyer to inspect for the hairline cracks.

I have a 2006 sea ray slx and itis a monster boat. Everyone always compliments her.
