I am looking at purchasing a 2005 390 motor yacht.

Does anyone have any comments to make on this boat...pros/cons?

Thanks

Frank

I picked up my 2007 40 in September and shipped her to Ohio where she is now in storage. We boat out of the Sandusky area. Where are you located in Lake Erie. PM me as I just went through the same thing you are going through.

I picked up my 2004 390MY a year ago. We cruised Long Island Sound to Newport and Block Island without any issues.

I find the boat to be very easy to handle and dock. I especially appreciate the hard top and windshield. We were hanging out enjoying cocktails in the cockpit well into November thanks to the cockpit heater.

My wife and kids love the layout. There's plenty of storage throughout the boat.

The engine room with the diesels is a little tight. It took some time for me to get comfortable moving through the ER. With that, I am able to get around pretty well despite my size. Access to most of the service points is ok however, getting to some of the zincs is tough. I had to remove a strainer to get to the lower zinc on the starboard engines aftercooler.

All in all, I can honestly say that we love this boat and are very happy with our purchase.

Thanks John...I have heard that the 390 in rough seas (4'-6') can be some what unsteady. There has been comments that the boat has a tendecy to roll alot.

Have you had any experience in rougher weather?

Thanks

Frank

Frank,

It does tend to roll a bit in a quartering sea. From my perspective however, it was not uncomfortable and I always felt under control.

I try to avoid going out in those conditions but I don't have any real concerns if I find myself facing rougher seas. The boat fulfills the needs of my family and I feel the pros far outweigh the cons.

Thanks John...I appreciate you taking the time to repond. Sounds like it is not a major problem.
We cruise a fair amount and it seems that our return to port is rough more often than not.

Frank, I have several friends that own this boat. Great boat with one exception. There seems to be a un certified problem in the 2004 and 2005 Cummins Engines. My friend had both engines blow this summer because of the pressed seats in the pistons, I believe it was both #5 cylinder. His 2005 was just out of extended warranty. Luckily after several legal battles Cummins and Sea Ray stepped up and replaced both heads. Cummins was very closed mouth about this repair and any previous happenings. I guess that they did not want to aknowledge thus starting a major recall. For now they are handling on a one on one basis. The issue seems to be known if you are running the boat, then stop the boat and then restart(like if fueling) nad the engine started knocking and shut down. The following weekend as he was taking the boat to be repaired the other engine went. They also replaced the turbos when they did the engines. He was lucky !
