2005 220 SD home in time for christmas!

pchansen - I got that GPS mount, which of course served as an excuse to go down to the dealer and visit my boat. Works perfectly with my garmin 478 - thanks for posting.

I also installed a Phantom 2000 Standard Horizion behind the helm. The mic has all the controls on it.

Best regards

I love that radio. Unfortunately, Standard Horizon stopped making their Phantom series 3 years ago. If you know where I could pick one up, I'd really appreciate it. I think Garmin makes a multifunction mic that interfaces with their VHF 200 radio. The only problem is the cost. I've found the combo online for about $350. It's hard to justify when I can find a bunch of radios for sub-$100. I'm starting to look into hand-helds. I'll probably never need long range communication. I see my radio used for requesting lockage or calling for help. We'll see. Still doing my research.

You might want to check with Jim and see if he still has one in stock or where there might be a left over some where.

I still use a hand held in my ditch bag, but you will never get the range of a 25 watt mounted unit over a hand held with only 5 watt max. We go off shore a good bit and run 30-45 miles between inlets so having the extra range is important.

Best regards

Forgive me but who's Jim?

That is SUCH a great boat!! I loved my 05 220 SD and it was the same color too. Make sure you go ahead and pick yourself up an IAC to keep around, this was the only part I had to replace on mine.

Welcome to the site!

Hey if you ever need any manuals or info at all on that boat I still have every piece of documentation that came with mine new. The guy who bought it from me would never call me back or come get it. I kept every hanging tag and everything!

Call my silly, but what is the IAC? My boat is 3 years old now and I have yet to replace it.

Idle Air Control Valve. You will find out eventually. It is just "one of those parts". It is a good idea to keep a spare on board because it will go out. It is just a matter of time. Sometimes they just go out completely and can leave you stranded. Other times they will go out gradually and start showing symptoms.

Early symptoms include difficulty starting and engine dies when you put it in Neutral.

It is a $90 part and a 10 minute simple fix. Be sure you get a spare gasket too.

I am told keeping the IAC Mufflers changed will prolong the life of the IAC. Those are about 65 cents each and are easily changed. The IAC is behind the flame arrestor. The IAC Mufflers are nothing more than foam pieces the size of a sugar cube and they are compressed in a slot under the Flame arrestor.

I have a 350 MAG. Does it have the same IAC issue?

Yes. This affects all of the Small Block MPI models. Same part.

Not sure if the big blocks use the same p/n as I have never checked. I know they have one though.

If you have not had an issue yet, you are lucky. But be prepared. I think problems usually start when the IAC has 100 hours or so on it although I have heard of them failing earlier and lasting longer. Just keep the mufflers changed and it will prolong the life of the IAC because dirt in the muffler will restrict air flow to the IAC. Some have removed the muffler completely to help preserve the IAC. I just replace them because the muffler is less than $1

Thanks for the advice. Can I get the muffler from West Marine, or only a SeaRay dealer?

It is a Merc/Quicksilver part number that will need to be purchased at a Merc Dealer. West Marine does not carry. I order them from an online source when I get other items.

Should be p/n 35-863829 but double check.

Thanks for the offer, amazingly, even though our boat was an "involuntary repo" (at least that's what the paperwork attached to the title stated), I received all the manuals- down to the sample vinyl cleaner. Now if someone would post a picture of an IAC, or maybe even a DIY that shows how to replace it and/or the mufflers that would be great.
It's still too cold here in southern Washington to pull the boat out but I've been busy upgrading the boat. So for, I've installed a transom mounted trim switch, LED cockpit lights, swim platform mounted Magma BBQ ( still in box, but not for long). Also on the list is a Blue Sea Add-a-battery and group 29 house battery.

As mentioned earlier, I got that same mount you used for your Garmin 441, intending to use it with my 478. However now I'm thinking about updating some of my electronics - maybe get a new marine radio and GPS that support MMSI distress etc.

The pics of your 441 look great, but I'm considering going with the 541 to get the larger screen (5" vs 4"). My concern is that mounting the larger one in that location might be a little overwhelming and maybe the 441 is actually better there.
Any thoughts on this? Did you consider the 541 at all?

Part number for the IAC seems to be 805224A1. Check here:http://www.marinepowerservice.com/B...kdrive/805224A1/path/834987965/pickyear/0.cfm Number 7 in the diagram, I believe..Some one please verify before I order. Also, it would probably be a good idea to pick up the associated o-ring.

Your best bet is to call Marine Power Service, give them your serial number to be sure before ordering. Sometimes these part numbers change when they switch OEM vendors. Also sometines I have noticed the part number for the part that is in the Mercury box is different than the exact same part if it happens to be in a Quicksilver branded box. For whatever reason, many parts are packaged and sold under both names.

The Merc box usually costs more to make than the Quicksilver.

Here is what I have based on my last order of this item in the summer of 2010 for my 2005 5.0MPI engines.

IAC p/n 862998
Gasket p/n 27-863112

and you may as well change the muffler which is- 35-863829 (buy several of these, they are cheap)
