I'm getting no water flow. Water pump and thermostat look ok.

Any other ideas or help?

Or engine diagrams..

Thanks.

"Look"? Can you be more specific as to what you mean by that? And what does "no flow" mean?

When was the last time you replaced the raw water pump impeller? Do you have an Alpha or a Bravo? Your "engine details" just says "Merc". PS: The purpose of filling in those details is so that others can better help you as they would know the specifics of what your boat, engine, drive and trailer are.

Sorry I'm just relaying info from a mechanic friend of mine. The thermostat works, we tested it. He said the water pump in the engine compartment shows no sign of not working.

This is a merc 5.0 bravo 3

An no flow means we put the ears on her and nothing gets sucked into the engine. Sorry for the lay-men terms there as I am no mechanic.

I've been told could be impeller or water pump in lower unit but not really sure the break-down of that area.

Thanks for any help.

With a Bravo, the raw water pump (the thing that actually sucks the water in and pushes to the engine, where the circulating pump/water pump circulates it through the engine) is mounted on the engine. An Alpha has it in the drive.

Sometimes (if it hasn't been run in a while), it takes a good 20 seconds to see water coming out. But, you're saying the "spray" that escapes the ears doesn't change? In that case, if you don't know when the impeller has been changed, have that done right away and re-test.

Thanks for info. But where is the impeller in the water pump I assume?

The "water pump" that looks like the one on your car is the "circulating pump". That is not the one we're talking about. The "impeller" is located in the "sea water pump" - it is on the bottom, starboard corner of the engine - it is belt driven.

Thanks again for the help. Certainly a learning curve for an Army Tank diesel mechanic.. haha

I guess my next question will either be :

1. Where do I get another impeller?

or

2. Impeller looks fine, what next? (Hope this isn't the case. UGH)

And here she is:

I'm not an expert mind you, but I think you've found your problem. :) Now, where did those vanes go???

Holy crap! Ayuh, that'd do it.

Yes, gotta find those vanes as they can cause overheating problems as they will block passages. Check the t-stat housing and COLLECT AND SAVE all pieces... it's going to be like a puzzle for you.

Rex, didn't you say your mechanic said the water pump was OK? Holy crap, I would fire this friend and get a "qualified" mechanic. That thing is shot! I wish you the best in finding the scrap pieces.

Well he didn't realize there were 2 water pumps. Not a boat mechanic.
