2004 420DB Sedan Bridge - Fair Game - Project Thread

That is beautiful and exactly what I need.
Is it the 19.7 x 27.5 ? or the larger size 24 x 37?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

yes, its the large one. Then, you need the garelick table mount, and some 14x3/4 stainless oval head screws. The stock table post is 25" tall. I got a 28" to raise it a bit. The 30" offered would be way too tall.

I bought two of these tables from Marine Teak and they are great! One question though... Why did you buy a new table mount? I just took them off both of my old tables and used them on the new tables.

And as for those built in cupholders on the Sea Ray molded tables... We spilled more drinks because of them than we saved... When you set a glass on the table and you're not paying close attention, if it is on the edge of the recess, it tips it over.

I wanted to leave the other table intact. The mount and screws were less than 40 bucks, so not a big outlay. If we ever decide we want to use that big table, it's still ready for use. I totally agree on the cup holders. a 1in indentation does not equate to a decent cup holder. We're better off with some non skid material (like a placemat) to help keep things from tipping.

On my boat the big white factory table doubles as the base to convert the lounge to a sun pad. You should have a one foot long pole for that and a couple of folding cushions to fit on the table top if yours has the same capability.

I am shopping for a 400DB and have been mostly focused on the '01 to '03 models. I know SR changes the way they classify models vs LOA and wonder if the 420DB's after '03 are basically the same boat? What is LOA of the 420DB and is layout similar to the 400DB's from '01-'03? Thanks!

Through '03, I think the 400db had an LOA of 44'. Beam 14'3''. From 2004 through 2010ish, the design changed over to the 420db, 44 sedan, 450 sedan (in 2010) - and those had an LOA of 45'5'', and 14'3''. I think the layouts are quite similar. You can go to the past models area of the Sea Ray website for full specs and more details.

The post '03 models have the same wet surface configuration. The LOA changed due to the integrated swim platform (versus the bolt on style on pre '04). The interior layouts are similar, but have unique differences. The engine room layout is improved in the newer models as well.

Dimensions above are correct. From what I can remember when shopping, The platform is integral on the 420. salon is a little larger on the 420 because of the increase in oal. The engine room is laid out better because there is more room, because the boat is taller than the 400, (3 steps up to the salon from the galley vs. 2 in the 400, and the oal again. There is a nice linen closet in the 2nd head similar to the pantry in the galley. And a few other differences. Of course the Euro look. The big thing for me was the height of the arch, a no-go on the west end of the Erie Canal.
We just then concentrated on the latest 400 we could find, and were able to get a 2004 (the cross over year) always fresh water boat that was only 250 miles away. If you visit the model archives as suggested above, If I remember correctly, the engine room picture shown is not that of a DB, but of a DA. I am sue some 420 owners can add some more. Good luck with what ever you choose.

Table looks awesome!! Thanks to your previous post I installed my TV yesterday with no difficulties. Decided on a 28" Vizio smart TV. The rear shape of the Vizio allowed me to get a snugger fit. It looks great, just like yours!!

Haven't posted some recent and in progress updates... here's an LED upgrade of the arch lights. The boat came with all Perko stern lights as courtesy and arch lights. Over the last 10 years, some of them started pitting, the lenses yellowing, etc. I was able to remove, disassemble, and clean all of them, replacing LEDs. I had to snag some good parts from some, and swap with others. I ended up with 2 cockpit, 1 stairway, and 2 bridge lights that were all in pretty good shape. The arch lights - not so much.

Did some hunting for LEDs that would fit the existing holes, and found Lumitec. These are 'orbit' series with fush mount adapters for the ears. Lumitec has a cool technology that the LEDs are actually 4 color, and switch when you quickly toggle the power to them. The one's I got do white, red, blue, and purple. Some will even dim if desired (I didn't want that).

Got a chance to try them in the dark - and they are surprisingly bright. Great light. 2 is plenty for lighting up the bridge.

Here's a smaller project... One of the 'issues' we knew about when we bought the boat. The dash visor was extremely worn/brittle and showing major signs of 10 years of being in the sun. I looked at the possibility of recovering it, painting it with a vinyl paint, replacing it (thinking that would be $$$)

Called Sea Ray directly to verify part numbers and availability - and as luck would have it, there was 1 in existance in a warehouse in the midwest. wow. Called up a Sea Ray dealer to order it, and even better... it was only $240 bucks. Thought for sure that one of these custom items would be closer to a full 4 digits.

Took a couple of weeks for shipping and everything to work itself through -- but wow, what a difference it makes.

It's definitely not a black or dark gray, but rather a 'bronze' color.

Somebody didn't take care of the SkyScreen! In the master, the Ocean Aire Skyscreen had some serious residue that would not clean up with anything. The boat has hardly ever been slept in for the 10 years it's been in the water. There's very little wear and tear on anything, but for some reason - this thing got all sorts of mucked up. Somehow, they left it closed with some sort of humidity or moisture (no idea from where).

And of course, it would be far too easy of Sea Ray to use a standard size for this. I hunted far and wide, talked to Ocean Aire directly, but nobody 'stocked' the part. Had to order it from Sea Ray directly, which they then had Ocean Aire make it custom to their previous specs.

Amazingly simple to swap out. Came already assembled... 4 screws out, 4 screws back in. no fighting with adjustments, same holes. Well worth it.

Have a host of projects ongoing that I will post later, but Santa came a bit early this year! Got a tender for Fair Game... she'll get rigged and delivered in January. I'll be going with a Ross Kelly/Nick Jackson davit more than likely... At 11'6'', she'll stretch the width, but I just couldn't resist! It's 12' between the cleats on the inward side of the platform.

AB 11ALX Console. Raw aluminum Hull, painted interior, full bench & console. Will be adding lots of goodies to this!

Very nice tender. How much hp are you putting on there? You should have no problem with the width. We have an 11'2" behind our 400 folded up on Weaver Davits with no issues.

BTW how much did SR charge you for your skyscreen?

Sorry for not replying on this sooner. I think the skyscreen was about 300 bucks. It's a custom part number, and Ocean Aire builds the unit, then ships it. It took several weeks to get it, but having a new one is much better than the old one.

Turns out the deck hatch fittings in the glass were loose, causing a bit of a water leak. Discovering that was fun!

Adding a couple of project updates since it's been a while...

This one was easy... The anchor was a Kodiak galvanized that had been used a fair bit. It needed replacing. So, of course, why not get stainless?

For anyone looking for a stainless anchor, but doesn't want to spend 1500 bucks, try www.marinepartdepot.com -- they regularly have sales for 15-25% off the website pricing, free shipping. It's a nice anchor for the money.

Back a few months, I did some overhauling of the electrical system - including the addition of a 2800 watt inverter. I previously posted a little description of what I did, so some of this is a copy/paste.

Sea Ray wires these boats up with basically 3 banks... There are 4 group 31's which are split into 2 pairs and used as a port and a starboard bank. The port bank of 2 batteries is essentially what runs the 12v side of the panel in the salon and is the 'house bank'. It also has duties of starting the port motor. It charges from the alternator on the port motor. The starboard bank is for the helm systems and the panel in the lazarette. It charges off of the starboard alternator. In the galley, there is a 2 bank charger that charges each of these banks on shore power. The 3rd bank is a pair of batteries wired serial to 24v for the bow thruster. This bank only charges on shore power or generator from a dedicated charger as well. I'm not a huge fan of this setup.

I ended up turning the 4 main batteries into a port side house bank, which I then added a 2800 watt Magnum inverter charger. It feeds the AC side of several circuits in the salon for tv's, microwave, etc. I added 2 new group 31's and formed a new starboard bank. Then, I added a single group 31 as a starter battery for the generator that is wholely dedicated. This gives me a larger house bank, the same capacity for a starboard bank, and a get out of jail free battery for the generator. Although alternators charge port and starboard respectively, I also added ACRs from the house bank to the starboard bank, and from the house bank to the generator battery just to make sure everything would stay charged up in case of alternator failure (I could run the generator which runs the chargers)

Finding a spot to install the Magnum inverter was the hardest. We picked one of the bulkheads on the starboard side near the shore power transformers. We also pushed up the bow thruster bank onto the shelf and removed the spare coolant jugs that were installed. This gave us room to install the 3 new batteries with ease.

The magnum control unit is wired to the same cabinet that the stereo and other electronics are controlled. I'll build a new panel when I am done with the modifications, but it works for now.

Overall, it's nice having a larger house bank - and I have enough room to expand to a 5th battery if needed. I also have the added comfort of a dedicated battery for the generator, although it may get re-purposed for either a stern thruster or power for a davit if needed.

Hey CougarCruiser, Love your boat. Someday I'm hoping to jump in to the sedan bridge! Someday. LOL Anyway I was looking through your post, and noticed on page 14 you show two can style lights that are hanging from the ceiling. Are those Lumitec replacements or stock for that boat. They look like Lumitec with those spring flaps on the side. I was looking to replace the two I have in the cabin of my 340 Sundancer. Currently there are two gold rimmed ones down there. They have both the 12v and 110 ? volt bulbs in them. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Mark

the photos in the pic are the stock lights from sea Ray. I don't know who the vendor was for those. Someone else who reads this might though. I replaced the bulbs with led's from marinebeam. I do like lumitec producs. You just need to find a light that fits the opening hole, regardless of vendor.

What engine did you go with? What is the hull weight? What is the total weight? I know the aluminum ones cost a bit more, but are a lot lighter than double hulled fiberglass.
