Getting ready for the season ahead and don't want to pay the 500.00$ at Marine Max for the annual maintenance. Actually they want to charge me 725.00 because they recommend a new impellar!! Thought it was pretty steep. I Bought it with 70 hrs and has 170 now. I've taken it in to get the annuals once before, and figured maybe i could do the next one myself. Any thoughts? Is it a pain in the ass? Whats the most important thing i should worry about?

I don’t know what kind of engine you have or how handy you are, but there are plenty of threads on DIY maintenance. Give this site’s search feature a try. All sorts of information.

I don’t think Marine Max is necessarily giving you bad advice regarding the impeller change. How long has it been since the water pump was last inspected?

Price for a 2yr/200 hr service is about 1200 I don't think will be much difference in price between engine types and outdrives which I'll guess you have a Bravo III.

The 1yr/100 hr service I paid about $600 for on my boat from Marine Max.

You should put your boating info and boating location in your signature.

What year did you buy your boat with 70 hrs on it? 70hr on a 2004 boat is nothing, typical boating you put 100hrs a year which is why they recommend service every 100hrs or once a year whichever comes first. Even if MM changed your impeller when you bought the boat you've put 100hrs on it it should probably be changed. Changing the impeller is not hard the issue is getting to it. Now I've not done it myself yet but have read a lot about it in preperation to build up my confidence to do it myself there was another member that did the change (with pictures) on here it was a sundancer but it's a 5.0L MPI with Bravo III so close or even maybe the same as yours.

Based on the age of your boat though I'd be curious to know what previously has been done. Things like sparkplugs, rotor, distributer cap, should of been replaced atleast once already if not twice. Gear Lube, Oil, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter are things that should be done once a year or every 100 hrs.

Your manual will tell you all the intervals of recommended service. Service manuals are also available here on the site if you search for them.

You will become very good friends with the "Search" and "Advanced Search" feature of the site.

This is the link I referred to unfortuantly the images no longer appear, perhaps Wes or Jim can fix them.

DIY = Do It Yourself

Here is the link to manuals

Since I do not know your skill level this is do it at your own risk :grin: I highly recommend reading the threads here and also the service manual before trying to do this on your own. You shouldn't need any special tools but you will need a Impeller kit which comes with all the parts you need to replace the impeller.

Sweetness. If you scroll down some more you can view all the pics. That is exactly what i needed. Thanks a lot. I think i can handle this. Time to get workin!
