2003 Sundeck w/ 496 8.1 - sea water pump - mechanic said pull engine to change!

Hi, I have a 2003 270 Sundeck 8.2 496 and need to change the sea water pump....my mechanic says the engine needs to be pulled, which I have trouble believing. Has anyone had to change out their pump yet....how was it done.......links, advice...anything....sounds like a huge job for a 300 part! Thanks in advance!

If it's really just changing the seawater pump, and probably he is talking about the rubber impeller which is a wear item not the whole pump, there is no way you would have to pull the engine. I am assuming that boat has a BravoIII outdrive, which has the seawater pump mounted on the engine, vs an Alpha drive in which case the seawater pump is in the out drive. Now, some boats it can be difficult to access, but from the Sundecks I have seen engine access is pretty good.
