I recently completed a valve job and reinstalled the head on my 2003 6.2L MPI engine in my 30' Sundancer. (Serial Number: 0M358142). I did not mark the distributor when I removed it during disassembly (dumb move). When I reinstalled the distributor I used the procedure in the manual for when you are doing a rebuild (without marking distributor, what a mistake!). The engine is up and running, and while the boat is dry docked, I run the RPM's up above idle I get a slight bog then then the engine catches up.
Here is what I learned:
1. The timing cannot be set on these engines with a timing light.
2. The timing can be set using a mercruiser scanning tool but even this does not really set timing it only monitors it while you fine tweak the distributor to get the spark angle straight (I am getting conflicting info on this though). I used an older Quicksilver Digital Diagnostic scan tool but could not put it in a service or "base" mode to set the timing. What is the procedure for fine tuning the timing?
3. Engine seems to be running fine except for that small hesitation when you start to move to higher RPM's in neutral.
Here is what I will be doing to troubleshoot:
1. Changing the fuel/water separator out to eliminate this as the problem.
2. Squirting brake fluid cleaner on intake manifold to see if I have any vacuum leaks at gasket here.
3. Changing distributor cap and rotor. (I already put new plugs in)
Any other ideas on what to troubleshoot and how to fine tune timing would be greatly appreciated.
