All,
looking for some help. Having some issues with steering using steering wheel. Started noticing the steering was loose and unresponsive at lower speeds at the end of last season but no real issues while planed out.

Had the boat out of the water for winter maintenance and now I'm really noticing it. Took out yesterday and very unresponsive at both lower and high speeds. I mean I turned the steering wheel multiple times before getting any type of response. Also very little resistance. I don't even think it would lock in at port or starboard side. Luckily for the v drives i could steer getting into dock using shifter levers.

Any suggestions on where to start with this? The season is not starting off too great...especially after getting gas yesterday. Thanks all!

Most likely a hydraulic system... check fluid level and maybe bleed the air out of the system. Could also be a sheered pin on the rudder controls.

I would take a look at level like JimG said and then take a look at the valve that cuts out the steering wheel when in Auto pilot.

Look at the base of you steering wheel assembly. You likely have a plug on the top of it. You can buy a fill tub assembly and fluid at west marine. Tube is about $20.

Probably something similar to this

Check the Sea Star hyd cylinder that makes the rudders move for a leak. Had this happen to me. Rebuilt with new seals, fill and bleed the system, and all good again.
