We are looking at a 2002 280 Sundancer that needs a complete exhaust. What are we looking at in parts? Is it just risers, manifolds and gaskets? It has a twin 4.3 Merc with Alpha drive. Is it a difficult job?

I am seconding Todd, though I did actually buy from MercExhaust.com. It is not a difficult job per se, but it will depend upon your manifold bolts. 5 of mine were so rusted to the engine that I had my mechanic drill them out after he couldn't get them out. I spent a lot of time heating and hitting them with penetrating oil. To get the manifold off, I had to cut it out with a dremel.

However, if they had not been in such bad shape, I would have had them both replaced in a day, no problem for one engine. The only special tool you need is a torque wrench.

The other thing you could and should do is negotiate the replacement cost off of the price paid. And definitely get a survey.

Ever get another one like that try just a little heat & bee's wax. Heat will draw the wax up inside any voids in the threads & work as a lubricant.
Have done many on rusted manifold bolts, works everytime.

Hopefully that helps someone else. Me, I am going to do proper maintenance on the exhaust and it will NEVER get that way again while I own the boat. :smt021
