We are looking at a 2001 290 Sundancer. It has sat awhile, and the windshield frame is pitting, peeling and is just ugly looking. What does it take to remove and replace this? It will effect our offer.

Remove and replace would be about $3,000 at a yard. That is IF you can even find another windshield for a 2001. That will be the hard part.

If I could remove it, I could take the frame to the painter/Powder coater and have it redone. Just was wanting to know how hard it is to remove?

Anyone have any idea how the windshield comes off for replacement or painting?

It's through bolted. You'll need to access the underside of the fiberglass, directly under the frame.

I guess that would be a job for my skinny wife? And probably be a job for an upholsterer when I'm done?

"I guess that would be a job for my skinny wife? And probably be a job for an upholsterer when I'm done?" Good one!

You know what? I totally spaced. I just re-read what I originally wrote. They are screwed in, not through-bolted. Sorry! But hopefully this is good news for you!

There should be a rubber strip that runs along the base of the windshield on the outside. It just pulls out. The screws are located in the channel under the gasket. Be careful as the whole windshield is expensive. 1/2 of the 280 windshield cost our boat's PO's insurance company over $ 4K in 2006.

I would like to remove, If we get the boat, and sandblast to get all the corrosion and then powder coat. More durable than paint. There are a couple of other parts needing touchup as well.

Thanks all. This thing has sat a few years, last registered 2005, but has been run on occcasion at the MM dealership to keep things up. I have Maint records for 5 years, a lot of things have been done. Just wondering if all the other stuff being needed will out weight getting a newer boat.

Last couple years to name a few:
Hot water heater
Risers & Gaskets
Generator Service

How well does a Surveyor survey? Do I need to call one and just feel him out?

FYI - DOn't break the glass. Our 2001 280 had the port side window missing. Called Sea Ray, they said call Taylor. Called Taylor, they do not sell just the window, you have to buy the entire windshield as a unit. Cost: $ 8,000! Apparently uses 3/16" green tempered glass. Local shops can only get 1/8" and 1/4" green. They have ordered 3/16" green plex. I am hoping it will come is soon as the camper canvas does not do much good with a window missing.
