Mercruiser 5.7 squeaking see if you have any ideas. 2000 sea ray amberjack my port 5.7 the power steering didn't work and it was squeaking. I replaced power steering pump and it still doesn't seem to work. The squeak sounds like it's coming from power steering g pump area but I just replaced it. And idk why steering still hard. Not sure of engine years but they are 5.7l with tbi injection

idler pulley most likely, they go all the time. Alpha or bravo drives?

Put a couple drops of dish soap on the belt while it’s running and see if it goes away, might be a squeaky belt.

hard steering is usually a bad cable

My 454 was squeaking, I took a bar of soap and put it on the grooves of the serpentine belt. Went away, so I replace md the belt…

I'll try that with the belts. Things I replaced recently. Alternator, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, power steering pump, serpentine belt. I did get some power steering fluid on the belt so hope that it. Still don't know why power steering doesn't work still, maybe just takes forever to bleed it?

And what do you mean bad cable? It's hydraulic steering

it’s most likely a jacketed cable that drives the actuator on the steering arm at the transom. The tube is Teflon lined and just wears out over time and binds. I couldn’t believe the difference when I replaced the one on our 290, it went from unusable to single finger operation

Where is the cable I don't see one in the diagrams

it looks like this. I believe ours was 16' but you'd have to check the stamps on your existing cable . There are also at least two different size housings and they're not interchangeable so your best bet is to get a look at your current one. The long black metal piece is bolted up to the back of the wheel behind the helm. If its like our 290 was you can get to it by opening that hatch underneath the steering wheel where the breakers are

Somebody told me on another forum the twin mercs the port side does nothing and the lines just loop around. Makes sense albeit the stupidest thing I have ever heard from design point. I'll have to get in there Monday and see if I can see the lines

thats correct. One side is a slave but still has the pump

That's nuts why not just leave the pu.p out, that's stupid. Well guess I have a spare pump now
