Engines
8.1 Mercruiser V-Drives
Looking at one of these but have not made offer yet. Engines have 475 hr (seems a little high to me) and genset has 420 hr.

Engines are 7.4 mpi's and I noticed they are not FWC. Broker says these are "bluewater" engines and critical interal parts are ceramic coated to prevent corrosion.

Anyone had any experience with these engines? Also, any bad experiences with 340's?

Thanks

My 330 had Bluewaters with about 420 hours on them when I sold the boat - never had any problems with them. Mine were 340 HP in '95 not sure if the '99's were the same. My friend had a '99 330 with the 7.4 MPI's (310 HP) and I would have to back way off or I would run over him at cruise when running behind him.

"Bluewater" is Merc's name for their inboards that are not Horizon engines. My boat has those engines, except with the closed cooling system, as she came with every Sea Ray option except the fuel cross-over.

Anyway the Bluewater name is mostly meaningless, except for the guys in marketing. The only ceramic coating is on the insides of the exhaust manifolds, risers, and elbows. I don't think that the ceramic coating is worth anything. Cast iron expands more than ceramic, so the coating fissures which allows corrosion. Just Ducky's exhaust system didn't last any longer than any other cast exhaust components. If the boat was operated in salt water, the elbows, at least, should have been replaced no later than 2004. Replace the exhaust system with OEM components. A friend and I tried Osco exhaust components on our previous boats. The cheaper parts weren't worth the savings.

The 330/340 was the same hull in 1999. Expect 11.6 gal/hr/engine at 3000 and 15.4 gal/hr/engine at 3500. Best cruse in in that range 3200-3400 depending on load and conditions.

Best regards,
Frank

.....Engines have 475 hr (seems a little high to me) .........

That's 9 season's of use.....475 Hrs in 9 seasons is less than 55 hrs per seasons. That's actually a very nice number of hours for a boat that has 9 seasons under her hull. So long as the regular maintenance was performed (ask for records) I wouldn't worry about the hours at all. I would be more concerned if the boat had 180 hours. (20 hr/yr)....Heck, you could spend more time than that just idling at the dock...and someone who only puts 20 hr/ yr on a boat this size may not be the kind of person to do regular/preventive maintenance....

Yes...BUT....the MPGs would be terrible....somwhere in the range of.... "0"....

edited by Admin - Please start a new thread in the classifieds to advertise your boat for same - thank you

BH,

I tried finding your 2000 340 under the SR classified section of this board, but was unable to locate it?????? I'm sure you paid the $mall ad fee.

Jim please make sure his ad is posted ASAP!

Got to agree here.....

Be carefull though that with an older boat, this might have occurred - -

Excited new boat owner goes out every single chance they can 1st year. Takes a few long trips... adds 150 hours... next season, 50 hrs..... next two seasons 0 hours and sells...... My point is that with 400 hours on a 1999 model, it could have sat in a detoriating state for a while..... or not!!!

Only way to tell is to see maintenance records showing hobbs/ tach hours each year.

Only 475 hours on an 8 yr old boat. Thats only 60 hours per season. Thats nothing. 1200 might be a lot. It all depends how it was maitained. Get a good survey done.
