Hi I have a 1999 210 sun deck with a 5.0 E.F.I. When Engine is cold it starts up fine and will run great at all R.P.M ranges and idle perfect. When we stop and shut down and go to start up it will fire off and R.P.M. will go up and down and alarm will sound and stall. This will only happen within about 45 min of shut down. If we are shut down longer than that it will start right up and run just great for as long as it is running. Yesterday we were stopped at a marina on our way home and had start problem. After about 45 min it started up and ran great the entire 90 min ride home. After a quick wash down checked to see if it would start and had same problem. Went down to boat this morning and it started up and ran fine. I guess sensor problem. Any feedback would help. Thanks RICKKEY2

Do you smell any gas when you go to re-start?

Something similar happens to my MC 5.7. When cold it starts right up and runs great but if I shut down and go to restart right away I smell some strong gas and it wont start up for a while. I think its an issue with the choke. I am going to play with it today.

It does indeed sound like vapor lock.

I had a 1999 210 Sundeck with a 5.0 EFI and it did the same thing in the summer The solution was to install a one way valve in the water line between the fuel cooler and the engine block. What apparently happens on some of these engines is the heat from the engine block water will mix with the cooler water in the fuel cooler and cause the vapor lock. I have also been told this problem happens more frequently if you don't let the engine cool down at idle for a few minutes before turning off the ignition.

So if it happens to you again, open the engine hatch and turn on your blower. That ought to help cool it down enough after five or ten minutes so it can restart. You can also pack some ice on the fuel cooler itself. But I think the real solution is the one way valve because that is what worked for me.

Thanks for all the feedback on my starting problem. I spoke with the tech at the Sea Ray dealer where we bought our boat and he also said it was vapor lock. He also said to open engine cover and run blower for about ten minutes and it should start just fine. This problem only happens if I try to start within 30 to 40 minutes after shutdown. We went out yesterday and had no problem starting. One time we were stopped for only 20 minutes and ran blower for 10 minutes and started up just fine. We are lucky to live in the Florida Keys and the air temp is in the upper 80s and the water temp is already 86. Thanks again for the feedback and happy and safe boating to all.

Rick, For what its worth ??. I never shut my blowers off when running the engines. :smt001

I might catch some flak on this one. I've been doing it for 3yrs with no problems.

I do the same. Blowers on from 5 minutes prior to startup until shutdown. I figure blowers aren't all that expensive, so what the heck?
