hi all I've been asking questions about these boats. Well my friend had an offer accepted and we did the sea trial . 300 HP 3116's. Cat guys were on board. Boat only hit 2700 RPM'S. Cat guy says that's ok because it's not off by too much. Well from what I know that's wrong! What do you guys say?? Frank?

As long as the bottom is perfectly clean....no growth, no algae, no fouling of any kind including flaking bottom paint, and the engines developed good power and the temperatures stayed normal, then the engines are ok only turning up 2700........ until you can either remedy the bottom condition issues or re-pitch the props you need to limit the cruise rpms to 2300 rpm instead of 2400.

WOT rpm's is a product of loading. That means either load on the boat in gear, passengers, fuel, water, waste, etc., bottom condition or prop pitch. In 1998, Sea Ray didn't always get the props tweaked exactly right before the boat left t he factory. Half or more inboards that came to our dealership had to have the props re-pitched to ever get the right WOT. Perhaps this is just an unmolested all original boat (we can hope!). The new owner will need to have the props balanced and re-pitched for 2800 and the rpms need to be limited to 2300 rpm until he does.

Frank I'm surprised at your response. I've always been told 2800 to 2850 was mandatory. Other wise it's overloaded through the whole rpm range. This is preached on Boatdiesel all the time.

Re-read my post. 2700 is ok- 1.) until you find the reason for low rpms or re-pitch the props, & 2.) as long as you reduce cruise rpms by the same % you are under on WOT rpms......(2700 / 2800) X 2400 = 2315 rpms cruise....until you handle #1.
