Newb here. Just signed a contract pending successful sea trial and survey on a 1997 330 Sundancer. I've been lurking on this forum for months, and am grateful for all of the great advice and information members share here. We were originally looking at 340's that were a little bit newer, but happened to stumble across a beautifully maintained 97 330. We are hoping for a survey this week and if all goes well we will bring her back across Florida to Sanibel on the ICW around the new year.

I don't have any specific questions... I've read dozens of "what should I look for posts and responses" here on the forum and have been around boats long enough that I can tell when the owner really cares about their boat. I brought my flashlight, poked around in every cavity I could get to, and was heartened by the current owner, who could not wait to show me every single thing he had done to and knew about his boat.

We've always had boats in the family, though mostly freshwater. I did spend a couple of years at the helm of an 82 foot USCG cutter in the Carribean, but that was a few decades ago, so I have a lot of things to brush up on for sure.

I'm hopeful that the mechanical survey doesn't unveil any surprises - or expensive ones anyway. The boat does have 600 hrs on FWC 7.4 MPI engines, and that's probably my biggest concern. Plan to do compression and oil analysis. The boat is close to bristol condition in other aspects (close as an 18yr old boat could be anyway) and has lots of upgrades. We looked at a 340 earlier the same day, and the admiral nixed it immediately, and I followed suit shortly after even though it had brand new reman engines and trannys. Too many red flags on that boat, and lots of things I could see without the help of a surveyor that I knew I didn't want to deal with.

Fingers crossed that we will be spending our weekends on the hook in the somewhat shallow waters that surround Sanibel sometime soon.

Don't let the engine hours scare you...those are pretty low. I have a 1995 330 DA with the 7.4L carbed Mercs with V-drives and it have over 1,200 hours. The engines are made to run. I like the lay out of our style boats better then then 340. you can email any questions cjknoop@gmail.com Ive only had the boat for a year but it is a very easy a boat to use and operate. Good luck

Thanks SkiPharmer! I may take you up on that if things go the way we hope. I am sure I will have a hundred questions after the first overnight adventure. Glad to hear yours is still going strong after 1200 hrs. My understanding is that 2000-3000 hrs is not out of the question on well maintained FWC mercs. My logic was I'd rather have 600 hr motors on a boat that has been babied and cared for vs brand new motors (not even broken in) on a boat that obviously spent most of its life tied up in the canal. I came up with a $15000 list of to-dos on the 340 we looked at without the help of a surveyor who probably would have doubled that list.

Good luck with the purchase proceeding as planned. I had two different 330's, both 1996, and loved both of them.

If you've been lurking for awhile you know we have one main rule here--> If you don't post pics it didn't happen.

Hah! You know how bad I want to post those pics man.

My 454s have 2600 hours and the does what it did at 600 hours. On sea trial I ran the boat wide open for 1/2 hour + to see how it ran under load. Owner did not like the idea but it is your trial. Might want to tell them you want to run it at full throttle for an hour because there will come a day when you need to. If they say NO there is probable a reason other than to 50 gallons of gas you will burn. If NO offer to pay for the gas if you do not buy the boat.
Get an oil sample before and after your hard run. Test the after first if bad test the before. It will probably tell you things you need to know.

Welcome to CSR!

You're going to love the boat. Got ours about a year ago with 650 hours. Same situation, well cared for boat with hardly any usage. We purchased in Stuart, FL and drove it through the Okeechobee waterway back to Clearwater. 600 hours is a drop in the bucket. Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice. Survey is set for Thursday AM. About 40 min each way on the ICW to the haul-out location, so we should be able to exercise her a bit.

Good luck on the survey. I've had our 97 330 for about 7 seasons now. She has treated us well and is very comfortable! We have the 7 year itch to move up but this size boat has so many positives going for it we just can't seem to find a compelling boat to move to.

Post up any questions or PM me with any.

Take Care,

Well, the survey and seatrial went great and we closed the deal on Monday. I'll be traveling to Jupiter, FL on Saturday, then bringing her back on the ICW starting Sunday morning (best christmas present ever!). Current plan is to overnight in Clewiston at Roland Martin's, then finish up the trip on Monday. We will take our time and enjoy the journey and get to know the boat.

We are taking the rim route rather than directly across Okeechobee simply because the boat is "new to me" and we won't have had the time to build confidence in her mechanically yet, though the survey and sea trial results were good. We ran at WOT for about 10-12 min. There aren't a lot of long stretches at planing speed between where we were in Jupiter and where we pulled her out of the water in Port St. Lucie inlet, but I was satisfied, and the surveyor was pleased.

Engines topped out at 4500, and I measured 31.7 kts on the GPS with half fuel and four full-grown Americans on board. Only real problem noted in the survey is that the heater doesn't work, which won't be problem for us in southwest FL. The current owner pointed it out and just shrugged and said something to the effect of "I never needed it, so I focused on other stuff". The bottom was clean, anti-foul looks good, and the props, shafts, and rudders were treated with PropSpeed in 2013 and are still shiny. This guy really took good care of his boat.

I will post some pics of the boat and the trip when I get back. Super excited and can't wait for the first journey, but even more excited to get her back here to Sanibel and explore the area with my family and friends. Hopefully the trip is uneventful and we can have her out on San Carlos Bay for the New Year's weekend!

Congratulations!

Good luck on your trip!

Enjoy!

Cheers

Merry Christmas Jason and welcome to CSR. There was a 330DA at our marina for a long time and the owner and his family loved their boat. Congrats again, JC
