Hearing a click from the engine compartment when the key is turned. I havent checked out much yet but it seems to me like it could be the starter solenoid not engaging. The starter is the original. Any ideas or suggestions of where to start at?

My suggestion is to post details of what boat, engine, outdrive, battery configuration, last time it worked and circumstances, and any thing else you can think of to assist others to help you.

sorry I should of listed more details. It is a 1990 19' bowrider 5.0 mercruiser Alpha inboard/outboard. This seems to happen almost every time the key is turned. Usually I just keep turning the key and eventually the motor will turn over. Sometimes I can get lucky and it will start on the first try but that is very rare. Tested the battery and everything seems to be good there. When I go to turn the key all I here is a click that comes from the back by the battery.
