I've got a problem that is driving me crazy. I've got a 1989 340EC that's got a water leak somewhere above the galley that gives me water stains when it rains. My first thought was that the water was coming from the hole where the electrical wire goes to the horn which is right above the galley. I've removed the horn, cleaned everything up and resealed it but I still have the problem so it wasn't that. knowing that wherever the water is coming from it must be higher than that spot I've gone as far as removing the windshield mounting screws and resealing them. That did not fix the problem.

Anyone have any advice? I don't know where else to look. I know this was a common problem on many of these boats but have not found anyone that has found a fix for this.

Please Help!!

Thanks

I hope I am not jinxing myself but I have had no leaks from the top of the boat. However, there has be a thread or two about this and I believe the fix was to remove the rails and reseal the stanchion mounts.

Hi tmal2,
I had the same problem on my 390 EC and thought that it was the horn wire as well. I resealed it and still had a leak. I then put clear silicone around the shrinking windshield gasket on that side & the leaking stopped. Perhaps I should remove the rubber glazing seal this summer & reset it properly.
good luck with this ~ Ken :smt024

Thanks for the input Norcal but that can't be where it's coming from because that's below the area of the leak.

Ken, are you talking about the seal that holds the glass into the frame or the caulking that seals the frame to the boat?
I've already resealed where the frame meets the fiberglass with no luck.

There is a black plastic/vinyl trim that runs horizontal between the bottom of the windshield & the fiberglass. This trim has shrunk at both ends & really should be replaced. I presume that this trim covers up the screws that hold the windshield down. Whenever I filled the gap at the ends of this shrunken trim with clear silicone, the leaking inside stopped. I realize that this was just a band-aid, but it worked in the short term. I will have to address this problem properly next month. Any ideas where to source out this trim?

I have the same boat, and have the same leakage marks. Mines been under cover all winter, so haven't seen any leaks. I did reseal the bow stanchions as Norcal was talking about, but that was for a leak in the port locker near the forward berth. To be honest, other than the windshield and the horn, what else is up there? Really nothing. I do remember someone on either another forum or thread saying that they had removed the windshiled hardware and resealed everything and it seemed to go away. As a matter of fact, I think they said they removed the whole W/S assembly and rebed the whole thing. When you find out let me know. If you have any questions visit us in the Pre-Clintonites thread. We are all the "ol" boat guys (not as far back as the classics though) Shawn (norcal) myself, Ron (RonDDS) are always here, so give us a holler. So far I believe you are the only other 89 340EC I've bumped into! Also, put your info in your signature or everyone will yell at you!

Thanks electricaldoctor. I know exactly what you're talking about and will give it a try. I did already remove that black plastic strip and reseal all the screws under it holding the windshield down and figured that would have taken care of any water getting past the shrunken edges. Wish me luck

Thanks wileecoyote. I will take care of the profile/signature thing when I get a spare minute. Too bust getting the boat ready now.

Ya know....it seems like all the problems are on the 340 ECs. I'm beginnig to like my 'Dancer more and more.

It's just that you have been reading all my posts. There is only one with broken stuff, mine! This is the first EC that has been on here since I have been. Daniel P Thomas had one, but sold it. You just got lucky and found one that someone took care of:smt038

I had the same problem on my 87 'dancer. I resealed the windshield where it meets the deck and the problem "seemed" to stop.
Have any of you guys had to replace the cabinet sliding doors yet? I can't find a place that sells anything close to the original material.

i have fixed every leak thru the years on my 89 ec. the black strip at the bottom of your winshield has shrunk . you need to take it off and there are wood screws holding winshield in place. over the years vibration has caused screww holes to get opened up a little. pull one screw at a time and fill with silicone and re install screw. do one at a time across the front of the whole winshield. leaks will go away for about 5 seasons.

34 ec on lake michigan in chicago. zivio is name of boat.
angelo is my name.

ps. can you all send me threads for 34 express owners and info

Did you replace the strip at the bottom? I was going to take some off and measure it up so that I can find a replacement. I'm sure AuVeco has or can find the correct trim. It would be easier if someone has already done the legwork for me!

it is called windshield screw cover sold by the foot by a company who did most of all the black trim pieces on that boat in 1989. last contact number and name i have is N.A. Taylor taylor made systems. at 518-773-0636 a lady named gail may sold me trim for windshield and new trim for side windows when i re bedded them. found manufacturer thru sea ray customer service spoke to an old timer there. this gail may at taylor can look up your boat and tell you how many feet you need of each trim good luck
