Im in the process of buying a 1989 340. A couple of things i would like to find out one is the current owner is claiming that there is a propeller seal that is leaking water into the engine room? When i saw the boat yesterday i did not see anything coming from the shaft packing. What other seal is there on the shafts that could cause water to enter the engine room. Second is what generator is in these boats? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Adam

Sometimes shaft seal leak only when turning. Normal for standard shaft packing but not for dripless packing. You need to find out which type you have. In 1989 I believe the standard generator was a Quicksilver which was a division of Brunswick that purchased the Sea Ray brand around 1987. Not known for being reliable and very difficult to get parts for.

Which 340? Express or Sundancer?

What has me concerned with the shafts is he claims there is some kind of leak, the previous owner is not real knowledgable at all. If the cutlass bearings are shot will they leak into the boat? Im just trying get a feel for it before i pay money to survey the boat. Also its an express cruiser. Thanks

Chasntail......

If you provide me with a number to call, and hopefully the HIN of this 340, I believe I can offer a good deal of information on her. Just PM me with contact info and I will do so, provided I am not at sea...this past week I was in Nassau on Saturday (650FLY) St. Augustine (another 650FLY) on Monday, Hilton Head Tuesday, Charleston Wednesday and on a 590FLY in Ft. Pierce Friday....I need to start posting pic's for sure.

My knowledge of your '89 340 begins with knowing who gel coated the hull and deck of that boat.....me.

Let me know if I can help sir.

If the gen is red, it would be a Westerbeke. We had a 1989 340, it had a Westerbeke. Another spot on those boats to leak, which is quite common is the rudder packings. They are a bear to get to. If it is the prop shafts leaking, they may be able to be adjusted, another bear to get at.

My '89 340 DA has a 6.5k Onan MCCK. White in color. A prop shaft seal leak is not uncommon. If you're all original, you don't have dripless. You might have to repack the shaft seals. Can be done in the water. Is much easier to do if you remove the exhaust collector/crossover tubes on both engines. I did mine recently and used graphite. You could also check the engine alignment while you're there. Great boat, hope you enjoy it.

Whoops, just saw you have an express cruiser. Your shaft packing job will be a breeze I think since you are direct drive. No need to mess with the exhaust.

I know your busy would you care to look mine up?

Thanks for all the responses everyone, the boat fell through. I am however currently putting together a deal for a 1982 360. I know its an older boat but once i stepped aboard I fell in love. needs some TLC but systems work and is in fairly good shape for the year. My question is I will be replacing manifolds and risers. does anyone have a part number for them. I seem to be able to locate 1986 and newer. any help would be appreciated

Suggest you start a new thread. List what make and size engines are in the boat.
