1989 340 EC owners

Mark:
There's an awful lot to be said for having your boat a few minutes from the house. Mine is about 30 minutes, the new place will be about 45 minutes. BTW, the day that Big Brother took this photo, my whole clique was out. My slip is third row from the bottom of the image - there are 4 vacant slips, mine is the left-most one (I do NOT mean that politically). Black truck parked perpendicular to the slip.

Don:
I can see where your boat is and the red DB. Is that a 300 or a 340 DB? Looks like it's in good shape. Maybe we can let him into our new Pre-Clinton Club.

....Unfortunately for you, you may be seeing a lot more of me out there too. I may transient at your posh resort for about a week or so next summer. What's your rate per day per foot?

You can park your 'old ass' behind the house anytime.....and I'm sure I can find room for your boat too........

Just let me know when....you are definitely welcome.

That marina aerial view is cool. Those are the best pics I've found yet. Our area is rural, so you rarely find a spot where the google maps or msn photos go close enough to see anything. Shawn, Thanks for the offer of assistance. I'm sure I'll send you some questions your way. I'm thinking when it gets warm enough the first 2 things are 1.) Port locker comes out and leak /rubrail/bow stanchions get sealed. 2.) helm comes off and door gets fixed. Thanks for all the help so far, actually since the parts are already on the way I will be installing my new fresh water flush kit first!

Hi Shawn,
Read your thread, interesting, I'm sure Wileecoyte will be happy to read your response.:smt038 He has got his hands full with his restoration, but wait till its done, we know the feeling, took me 7 years to get mine into near mint condition.
I thought I would mention, with the help of Searay and Bennett Trim Tabs, I made a modification to my boat, when I got done CaptTim followed suit. I corrected about 90 percent of the nose high attitude, Interested?
Maybe I should have started another thread in another area, did I screw up?

Yeah Don, I'm interested. You should start a new thread or PM me. Pretender is coming out next spring for a list of little things. Adding one more should not be a problem.

Have you replace that poor excuse for a swim platform yet?

Ron,

That boat is a 1989 340db same as yours, its named "Southern Confort" pretty cool. He also spent a ton of money keeping it prestine. Last year a complete new $5000 Raymarine electronics package, new rugs, new risers, manifolds, etc. 2 years ago I spent $8800. on a complete Furno Navnet System installed. Video docking camera and all. I always tell him mine is still better with the 4kw 4' Open Array Antenna.:smt038 We are all good friends:smt038

Thanks for the link to Marinas.com, interesting, the shot of my marina appears to be 2 to 3 years old. I must have been out that day, you can see the 340db on D dock, 2nd dock from the left.

Shawn,
I'm going to put it on "Modifications/Customizations" for the (Tabs). Platform, living with it, bought new Identical Wood Inserts.

Don,

You should really consider the platform. It is by far, the best thng we have done to the boat to date. It changed the way we boat. Below are a couple of pictures.

Interesting side story: When I was inquiring to Swim Platforms, Inc. about platforms, the owner Scott Samuelson, asked several questions about our boat based on the picture I sent them. It turns out I own his old boat. Scott used to work for Sea Ray and ordered the boat new and was the original owner. He was very happy to see me place an order for his old boat.

It looks nice and I like the concept, for me it would push me further out in my slip. Here, they don't like to go over 32 in a 30 foot slip. A few of us are 34's they have no place to put them. On our dock they launch boats from the TravelLift, always complaining we are sticking out too far.
I posted a threads for the Tabs.
Thanks for the Info:thumbsup:

You're right about the extra length. Sea Ray lists the boat as 35' 11" with pulpit and platform. The new platform adds 17 inches takiing LOA to 37' 4".

I kinda like my old platform. I just noticed - you guys dont have a transom door???

Even thought it's sort of old and square, not that deep and kinda low to the water, it is quite often the big hangout locale...

Whaddaya meean we don't have a transome door? You need to look closer. Left side, same as yours. Ron, another really good reason for the extended platform is really evident in your last picture. The orginal platform mounts 10-12" below the transom door sill. That's a long step down to a VERY narrow surface. The new platform mounts 4" higher making it safer. And the ladder mounts in the center of the new platform eliminating that fugly fold up one. Would I steer you wrong? I promise if you put one on you will wonder why you did not do it sooner.

You think your platform is the hangout now wait 'till you put a bigger one and it only adds about 150 pounds. Everyone hangs out on ours when we are anchored out or sterned in at a marina. I can mount a table where the BBQ goes and put out snacks or a blender.

C'mon Ron....bring your boat into the new millenium. I am sending you a PM.

We have transom doors. They are a little farther off to the port side, but look identical. With all the other work I have to do, I can't see dropping that much coin for the new platform, and mine is coming apart! I know everyone says the original is so small it's worthless, but thats why I got a boat with a big deck, walk in transom door and you have all the room you need.

SHOOT! Sorry guys. I see it now on Shawn's pix. The first pic you cant see that side, the second it is perfectly obscured by the piling and the third pic shows it but at with the bright exposure, you have to look twice. The hinges are visible but the seams are hardly there. SORRY.

Mark, I agree with you. Mine is in perfect condition and I like the teak accent insert. Starting with gasoline, there's so many things I could do with that money. Besides, I don't want any more people on my platform. I'd wind up with water ingestion if I increased the capacity.

OK, I have an update. I started to pulling stuff apart. First let me say I messed up and forgot my camera. Today was a perfect day, since it's been raining for a few days steady now. Sadly it was still cold. I ended up pulling apart the inside of the port locker, then pulled the panel off the port side next to the berth, panel to anchor locker, etc. I appears to me that the leak is not coming from the side window. It ends just aft of the bulkhead and this area was dry. Some of the material aft of the bow stanchion (which is just above the locker) was wet, but as I got further forward it was dry. It appears to me that the bow stanchion is the source of my leak. Once I remove the nuts and plate I will be able to pull the material back further. If I had a blade, I may have cut around the plate and pulled it back, but it is tight in there. Hopefully I don't have to disassemble the locker because it seems that it's pieced together with teak trim and lots of staples. I hope to take pics and put them up. It appears to be slow leak, I may go back and put some baby powder around the area to see where the water migrates from.

Wiley C.

I am assuming you got a REALLY good deal on your boat or you are truly a patient man. You have really taken on a project.

I have an '89 340da in the same colors as yours. Below are some pics of ours. We have been trying to tone down some of the pink on the boat with other colors except for the canvas. The PO replaced all the burgundy with this gray. We removed the old stripes and that ugly mauve and replaced with burgundy and silver.

I know you said you didn't want to spend the bucks for the new platform but it looks like you will be spending money on repairs to the old one. This one is so much more usable.

Here is a couple of shots of the cockpit last year after I removed and refinished all the cockpit teak.

Lastly, here are some shots of the cabin. We replaced both matresses and did the dinette upholstery ourselves as well as the curtains. This has been our ongoing project to tone down the pink.
Good luck. I know you will get it where you want. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Shawn

Shawn
I expect to see those red dock lines COILED neatly in the next set of photos!

I got a pretty good deal (I think) and most of the problem is Ron has been filling my head with all these projects. My thing is I'm one of those people who likes to get in and figure out how stuff works and if I'm gonna do it I try to do it right. I could have just squeezed some silicone around the bow stanchions and bolts, but I went ahead and ripped the inside apart to make sure there was no more rot. I knew it would be a little project, but by next year I hope to have mine looking as nice as yours. I may change my mind after I use it for a while, but I'm not really a fan of the huge swim platform, never seen one in person, but they always look like you would have to dock 15' from the pier. I may end up putting one on eventually, who knows. I just want to get the stupid thing in the water and work out some of the bugs first. Just remember Shawn if you need to pull something apart chances are I will be able to tell you how!!:smt043:smt089
Don't know whether to laugh or cry about that!

Well...I might be about to join you in the quest for the "perfect" 34 EC. I am in negotiations with this one. The 454's have 40 hrs on the rebuild (documented) and the transmissions are fresh. The cockpit and cabin upholstery/carpet/headliner are new. The generator was yanked and needs a replacement. All of the cockpit Sunbrella and side curtains are new as well. The hull topsides have been repainted within the last year.....but what about that damn companionway door!!?? I can't get this one to budge. I plan to sea trial soon. Any ideas on a direct replacement for the old Quicksilver generator?

By the way...82 and sunny here today in West Palm Beach.
