As I was doing my spring work, I had the sea strainers out. Last year I had problems sealing the top of the strainers with wing nuts that lock them down. It seams that there is a gasket under the top. I really had to look hard at them to see what was left. What would you use to make new ones or are there replacement gaskets that can be bought?

I had to order a new glass for my generator strainer a few years ago and I found the web site of the original manufacture.

Thanks for the info, none of those strainers are the ones I have. I went to my favorite mechanic, who also owns 1999 450 Sea Ray Sundancer. I just went out and bought rubberized cork gasket material. Since this was original, 24 years old, the best he could guess it was is that material. Making up news ones.

my original was cork, replacement from WM rubber. Rubber was close to the dimensions of a large oil filter seal

I went and looked at the site before I posted and when you said about the 2 wing nuts it struck me as odd, my strainers are all original and traced them back to the manufacture I posted. I would have thought our boats would have the same seeing as they are the same year. I should not be surprised that they are not, I've seen 1988 300's and the controls and venting for the AC are not the same right out of the factory.

Glad you got your problem solved.

Sea Ray uses both Groco and Perko strainers. The ones in question are Perko, and Perko uses a cork gasket when they are assembled. However, the cork material (including your homemade replacements) will shortly crush and allow the lid to bottom against the strainer body where they no longer seal. Perko also offers the rubber type gasket as a replacement. Rubber is far superior since it will compress but never crushes. I replaced mine in 1998, and so far (14 years later) they still don't leak.
