1987 Sea Ray 268. Covered slip
Engines
7.4 Mercruiser
Hi, just purchased an 87 268, big block Mercruiser and onan gen set. Slipped at Lake Mead its whole life so no trailer.
I have a question about the head, it had a cassette toilet which is going in the trash. Id like to put back what was there before but I don't know what it was. There are two white corrugated lines coming out of the wall. One is about 3/4" and the other looks like 1-1/2". Can anyone advise?

Second question, the transom fold up bench is missing. Does anyone have pics they can send me so I can build one from scratch? I'd love to be able to use this seat.

Thanks for all thoughts and opinions.

Chris

Welcome to CSR. Some pics of the hoses and some of the bilge/eng. room will help answer your questions better about the head. As for the rear bench, a lot of people with that vintage remove it in lieu of a cooler with a designated cushion on top an a couple of chairs like these.

Got it. We are going to deep clean it this weekend and get more pictures I can post up.
I also want to refinish the teak wood. Its in great shape and all there. Was going to use teak oil but was wondering what grit sandpaper would be best or if there is a better method.

I have the same head set up in my boat. Mine is the original and still works fine.
The larger hose is the clean-out hose. This hose should connect to a deck plate like the fuel deck plate. That's where the marina connects the waste sucker pump-out hose. The head end (bottom) of that hose should have a hard plastic fitting on it that has an angled end that goes into the head storage tank part. The angle is there so the bottom of that hard plastic part is level (parallel) with the bottom edge of the holding tank so almost all of the waste gets sucked out.
The smaller hose is just a vent for the "system" and acts just like the vents on the roof of your house. It should be connected to a vent on the side of the hull.

I need seating for the little ones and was thinking something fixed would be better for them when the lake gets rough.
Anyone have a rear bench they want to sell??

For the teak. I usually start with 60 or 80 grit and work my way to 220. I found Behlen's teak oil to work best of the many dozed I tried over a couple decades.

Captain's chairs like recommended above are way more comfortable than the fold down transom seat.

For the head in a 268, I highly recommend this for being odor-free, reasonably easy to install and comfortable to use:

Is that an Alpha against that 454? If so, be easy on the throttle...

Great advice on the teak refinish.
The toilet looks like it will fit the bill. Do you think it will hook up to my waste port on the side of the hull? That would make pumping it out a breeze.
The engine is a low compression, 8.5:1 330 hp when new. I'm easy on the throttle so I should be able to get a good bit of life out of it. I ran my 3.0 Mercruiser at 3200 rpm well below the 4000+ rpm and we did 25 mph which is fine for us.

I had an 87. The original toilet was this picture Dometic MSD965.
As stated the large hose is discharge, small is vent. 87 didn’t have a large bilge storage tank. True, in 87 there was no laws against pooping where the fish poop.
Discharge went to mascerator under bathroom sink then straight overboard out the side. Open cabinet and see.
Unless a previous owner rerouted the plumbing and installed a holding tank in bilge, then i don’t know.

Yes, you should be able to hook up the new head to an existing waste port.

And while those old 454 had relatively low hp numbers, they were still pretty 'torquey'. If that Alpha fails, the conversion to a Bravo is very straight forward. Not cheap, but very straight forward and a permanent fix.

Always loved the 268's.

If you are easy on and off the throttle, the Alpha drive should last you a long time. I put the 16x16 “elephant ear” prop on it. Huge improvement to keeping her on plane at low rpm’s.

Had the best night sleeps on our ‘88 268!! Great boats!!

Our rear bench was in tact and fully functional. Always hated that thing. I would definitely elect for the cooler and deck chairs.

We stayed on the boat this weekend while we cleaned it and I must say we slept really well. We will go the deck chair route as we want to build the bench area to hold folding chairs, emergency paddle, swim noodles, ect. I have a table from our toy hauler I was going to use with a flush mount attached to the engine hatch cover.

Putting in a little bit of work, blasting off zebra muscles and alge. Going to rebuild the water pump and remove the intake vents to make sure I have all the muscles out then fresh paint for the drive.

Wow! Great set up. Love the covered slip and lift.

Be careful with that pressure washer. Never get it near seams and seals in the outdrive or intrusions in the hull. They can, and do, blow water past seals and sealant causing damage.

I only cleaned a little with the pressure washer. We are going to let them dry and they should fall off. It's going to be two weeks before we can get back and work on it again. We help run the motorcycle race for the Mint 400 next weekend. I have a list of tune up parts for the engine, generator and drive for when we go back.

We were on the houseboat docks, the slip belongs to our good friends who are graciously letting us use it for a few weeks. We have a smaller 30' slip a few docks over. I may look into a lift for our slip in the future.

Overman, forget the transom seat. They were wood based, most rotted by now. And you basically sat with knees in your face. Good for children. If you notice, in 87 - 89 the seat folded in, leaving the wood exposed. In 90 plus the seat folded out keeping the wood tucked in and protected. The deck chairs are best for adults.

Transom seat is out. Thinking of two deck chairs and a cooler between them with a cushion on top is going to be the way to go.
Would really like to install a flush mount for a table on the engine/bilge cover unless thats a no no.

Can anyone shed some light on this dinette as to how to use as a bed? I know the table makes a base and the two cushions pull out.
Am I missing a cushion for the center or do the two side cushions swivel 90° to make the bed. The V berth cushions are sacked and make for a tough nights sleep. The aft berth cushions are comfy.

The table when folded over flat sets on 2 wood slats on each dinette seat. Then pull out both seats, the cushion under the radio lays down and fills the gap between hull and dinette seats after you pull seats out. Then find the other 2 cushions to lay on top of the table. They are often laid against each side of the v bunk or thrown in aft cabin. I have pictures somewhere will try to find in next few days.

Simply pull the seats out and that long cushion piece fills in along the wall.

Pull the table and store the post, open the table up and it sits down on a ledge between the two seats. There are a couple fill cushions that sit on top of the table to complete the bed.

Thanks guys i thought thats how it went. We are going to look for the two missing cushions.
Just had to cut the rotor off with a dremel tool so we have fire again. I broke the rotor inspecting it. Probably was not changed in a decade.
