I am getting ready to completely revamp my bridge station and straighten out the birds nest (wiring nightmare). I am going to pull all the gages, controls etc.

In looking at the steering, it is hydraulic. No power that I am aware of, just straight hydraulic.

I want to disconnect the lines up on the bridge, so I can take the console off. I know once I crack the lines they will get air into them.

What cautions should I look for if I disconnect the lines? Do I need to bleed the system or just work the steer wheel a few times?

Thanks for your help

The hydraulic steering system is very forgiving. The biggest challenge is to avoid drips and spills. Just take the lines loose and drain them of the oil that will pour out, then cover the ends to prevent trash from getting in the system and secure them as high as you can under the dash. The helm pump also needs to have the outlets covered. Remember the steering wheel is a pump, so when you rotate it, it is going to force oil out one of the fittings or the other.

When you put the system back together, fill the helm pump with the correct oil........just because it is red doesn't make it ATF..........Then turn the wheel from lock to lock several times, refull the pump reservoir, and do it again. Keep turning the wheel until the pump is full and stays that way. Last, check all the hose fittings for leaks.
