Twin Mercruiser 470s
Purchased a 84 255 Amberjack last year. Boat is in good condition with twin 470s. I've refinished most of the teak and now looking to replace the gauges and throttle controls. Can anyone recommend a good place to order parts from online?

Rastababy,

Welcome to CSR. Congrat's on the Amberjack. Hopefully you'll do a lot of fishing!

As for the guages... if you want original you'll need to find a salvage yard. every town has one, so please update your signature so others can direct you someone in your area.

If new is o.k., then any searay dealer, west marine, BOE, etc. should have what you need.

Good luck, and please, post before/after pics.

Gregg

Thanks for the info Gregg. I am looking to replace the Thottle Controls, but I'm having trouble figuring out whether or not I will need to update the cables as well. Any ideas as to what brands maybe good?

Thanks again.

I purchased most of my stuff from Kendor in Franklin, WI. They sell on EBay as Great Lakes Skipper. You may not find the correct gauges but they definitely have newer replacement sets and possibly some Morse/Teleflex cables that may work.

Congrats on your Amberjack!!! I have an 84 SRV245 and am working on restoring it slowly...post some pics up, I would like to see your boat.

the best place i found while restoring my '86 270 Amberjack is EBAY. most of the parts on my boat were bought off of ebay. i also have the 470's in mine for power... the controls i bought, at dealer cost were 550 bucks, i paid just over 150 bucks plus shipping, their the '07 and newer style. it would be a good idea to replace the all cables at the same time, for them i'd go to ebasicpower.com. heres a link to my myspace photo album. i havent uploaded any recent pics with the new controls i might tomorrow.

Rastababy,

You might want to visit Checker Marine in LaSalle, MI. they are a marine salvage yard and may have some parts.

Good Luck!

Gregg

I also have a 255 aj with the 470's. Haven't had it in the water yet and wondering what cruising speed and WOT can I expect?

Ended up replacing the internal button mechanism, no need to change the controls. $30 dollars in parts but 3 hrs labor. Currently stripping and repainting the outdrives.

I run it at WOT around 3800-4000 rarely. Usually closer to 3500 no need to stress it I guess.

Those AJ's are nice, I like the glass liners.. The reason I ask about your controls is I would like to up date mine.I want my trim switchs in the handles not on my dash and still keep it stock looking. As long as I stay in the mid to later 80's I can use my cables. Good luck with your AJ....( think your wot should be more like 4500-4600)

Hey Restababy,

I also just purchased an amberjack not long ago.

Mine is an 85 255 amberjack that i too plan on doing some upgrades on.

Would love to see some pics of your boat and any improvements you do to it.
I'll get some pics of mine up if i ever remember to take the camera with me.

Right now mine is in the shop getting the transom assembly re-sealed and the swivel shaft seal replaced.

Will post some up over the weekend. Just got it back from the shop as well. Had the outdrives sand blasted and repainted, control arms/cylinders rebuilt, anodes replaced as well.

Had crazy corrosion going on, come to find out you have to have 2" gap between bottom paint and your outdrive.

Rasta,

I'll second the reco of Checkers in LaSalle..just be sure to wear comfortable BOOTS when you go. I'm in wyandotte and if you didnt already know, Midway Marina/Boaters Value is probably the best place in the area for you to find just about anything new. Between Chuck and Duane, they will steer you right and not let you buy stuff you dont need. I can also tell you that Great Lakes Skipper is really good to work with and very fast. Post some pics of your teak (I'm a little biased towards it :)) and if you need any electrical work done, let me know. I have the person that you need to know locally.
