Was out enjoying the lake, cruising at 3000 RPM, smooth as glass, when the motor just stopped. No hesitation, just quit. Motor will crank, and act like it wants to catch, but won't stay running. If I run the throttle up a few times, and try and start, it will rev high for a second, and then die.

Have checked:
Fuel going in the throat of the carb
Spark at each plug w/ a spark tester. Plugs are getting fuel.
Neutral safety switch
Rebuilt carb, new fuel pump. new fuel (pumped out old fuel w/ an electric pump) new fuel filter and fuel basket, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and coil.

About ready to engage a mechanic....grrrr.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Really sounds Like a fuel issue... I know you say fuel to the carb... but it sounds like starvation... fuel pump?

Hi Jim,

Yeah I know it really does, but I just replaced the fuel pump, and I can see fuel squirting into the carb. I tried putting fuel in and the indication is the same. When the fuel pump went bad and I did that, it fired right up and ran for a minute.

Are you getting a strong spark at the plugs? If you're getting fuel, I would start there. If you have the original outdrive, you could also try disconnecting the shift interrupter switch. Maybe it is internally shorting out.
An '81 likely still has ignition points. Didn't see it mentioned in your list of parts.
