1980,s official Amberjack Thread

Have you considered the '86 and up 270 amberjacks? They all had twins and I think they came the 4.6's. A little more room and the same style.

If I recall correctly there's also issues with running hot. I may be wrong on that but I thought that was another 470 issue.
I was told by a friend thats merc mechanic to stay away from the 470, nothing but problems. I have the twin 5.7 and I love them...

Yup. I'm passing on the 255 w t470's. All the best AJ's currently powered by 260HP 5.7's.

I dont want 270, too big for my storage and use.

The 255 is perfect for me in spite it's under-powered presently. The thing is a boat of this age is still going to be requiring a repower of some sort or another anyways so my thinking is to budget ahead and go big when I do.

So I'll be the slowest boat cruising to bimini. No big deal for a year or two.

you're going to love the fuel burn!

I purchased a 1988 Amberjack this summer. The boat was well maintained by the previous owner. It's now winterized and I'll follow up in the spring with the regular maintenance. There are a lot of good older boats out there and I'll do my best to keep this one in good shape. I'm not sure if the photo up loaded. i'm new the the forum and will try again if the picture didn't load.

Welcome oldaj, love my 88 AJ still finishing renovation. Have alot of mechanical issues last season but its worked out. Gonna pull motors next month to do some things and get ready for 2015 season

Should be easy to get them out. The open deck on these boats make them easier to work on. I'm looking foward to this season too. Good luck with the mechanical work.

Motors are being pulled today . Going to replace the engine couplers cause they are all rusted and anything underneath that can be changed will be lol. Oil coolers , hoses etc., 2 nee starters also . She should be good to go this season . Crossing my fingers. Love the old boat. Cost my first and second born lol j/k buy we all know what we are getting into when we buy them .

Hello, new to the forum, I've had my AJ for about a year and have done a ton of work to it and I'm not done yet

I'm parting out an Amberjack for anyone interested. These parts are going to be basically free if you pay shipping!

I've owned my '87 270 Amberjack "SEABISCUIT" for 12 years. Great boat for entertaining and puttering around high mountain lakes on cool fall days.

Recently moved her from the upper TN River to North Alabama. The boat is/was powered by two MERC 150 hp 4 cylinders with alpha out drives. While I love the open spaces of the Amberjack (10ft beam), the engines and outdrives have never really been satisfactory.

This summer I started a complete refurb project including repower. The noisy, "shakey jakes", are coming out -to be replaced by two 175 hp Suzuki's on an Armstrong bracket (replaces the swim platform) - ah la SR Venture!

At the moment, I'm prepping her for transom work, bilge, top and bottom paint, and a list of updates and upgrades. Will try to post some before and after pix's as things progress if there is any interest.

I will have some parts available - some nib spares and some pull offs. Both engines run. I have two Alpha spares in good shape. Transom units show some corrosion but could be salvaged. Will post a complete list in a few weeks. If you have a specific need let me know.

Sounds like an awesome project. Please post up your progress.

Hello AJ Owners,

Lets see who else has one.

I have a 1988 AJ 270 And it is my second one. My first was a 1984 245.

I have a 84 255 and have been looking for a perfect radar arch. Can you tell me which brand you have on yours?

I have a 88 27' amberjack with twin 4.3 l mercs and alpha drives. I have had the boat for 15 years. One engine has even180 compression on all 6 and one engine has 180 on five and non on the other. Mechanic pulled head and recommends value job at least 2000.00 if cylinder isn't fouled. I am weighing my options any ideas.
