1976 Sea Ray SRV 195 Restoration

all the main and rod bearing looked very good ! If I wasn't as anal as I am id just keep all the bearings (going with new main and rod bearings).
Water pump looks to be in working out but has a lot of rust build up so im going to replace it hate to start pushing all that rust around a good motor.
Timing chain was in excellent shape according to the gauge it only had 716 hours

Camshaft looked good as well very little wear on it as well.

The pistons them selves look great the skirts look almost brand new ! The only issue I see with this motor was that it sat so long that the rings just rusted to the cylinder walls.
Each Piston was a big issue to get out but with some WD40 got it done. The cylinder walls have no ridges at all besides just some carbon build up. And show no indication of rings hitting.

And shes tore down !
So for this motor the plan is to Vat the block hone the cylinders new rings for the pistons , new main and rod bearings all new gaskets a new water pump some new valves for the heads along with one new pushrod and lifter rebuild the carb and she should be good to go !

Just wanted to chime in on this thread. I also have a 1976 srv 195. Rebuilt it about a year ago. Also has a closed bow, just wanted to make sure you were planning on removing and completely flushing out your gas tank. I skipped this step after rebuilding my motor and had to do this after my first trip to the water. Save yourself some headache and take the time to do it first.

Thanks for the tip.! I hadn't even planned on removing the tank I was just gonna pump it out and clear the lines.

Well it seems that every step forward requires a step back finally got a chance to take some core samples of my deck ....and looks like I get to replace the deck. Its kinda weird though the deck is rotten but still very stiff (no soft spots) and the foam is dry. I guess ill know more when I take out the deck huh .

I did essentially the same thing to a Mercruiser in-line six years ago. The engine had a slight knock at idle, and I was never sure of the cause. I figured the valve job and lifter replacement would take care of it, but I also suspected it may have been the wrist pins and for some reason at the time I did not replace them with the new rings and bearings, and the engine always had that same knock after the rebuild. Not sure it applies to your situation, but maybe something to consider while the rods and pistons are sitting out on a table any way.

Thanks ill definatly take a look at that ! I actually had an old AMC 258 that had that same issue I rebuilt the motor vated the block bored it out new pistons still had the knock finally found it to be a stopped up oil pump.

Looking good! Just picked up a SRV200 that Im going to fix up and keep on the water. Wish we had a junkyard like that around here. Junk boats pretty much end up in the dump.

98, what do you think about mounting a 16 gal tank on either side of the engine and relocating the battery to behind the pilots dash area? It would open up the cuddy for use. Or maybe use the ski locker for a tank. My SRV200 has gone through the same rebuild you are doing now. Thank God the PO did the engine and outdrive before I got it. We did all the interior work though. Check out my pics in my profile.

Ron, OldSkool will most likely under go the same floor rebuild you are needing. Everything else is in great shape but the top flooring is mushy in some areas. Found it this past spring but we'll run her until this fall then replace what she needs.

Sorry guys work has been absolutely crazy Ive only spent about two weekends at home since August but I did get a new tow rig for the Sea Ray. 2013 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3 V8 perfect for pulling the Sea Ray

Careful if the floor is mushy it is very well that the stringers are as well So just be prepared ..

My 1972 SRV 190 has the Mercruiser 165 inline 6 and it has the same knock at idle, but the engine still runs good. I can't seem to figure it out either.

Good luck with your restore. It took about a year to do mine, and I am still doing odds and ends. Right now the carb is being rebuilt.
