1975 sea ray w/electric shift

I took my boat out last week and my outdrive stopped. The engine was fine and continued to run but no gears. When I returned home I ran water to the drive and checked the gears once again. It appears that the the gears are working now. I don't know much about this type of stern drive. I'm a bit stumped...any suggestions

If it is an OMC make sure the gear oil in the bottom of the out drive is specifically for electric shift.
