Hello, I am in Ontario, Canada and I have a couple of questions that someone on-here might be able to answer regarding the years 1974 to 1981 30' Sea Ray Weekender ?

1. Is the reason for the fiberglass transom being molded outwards a few inches at about the swim platform level to the downside and about the width of twin inboard/outboard sterndrive units because this hull was originally designed for twin inboard/outboard sterndrive units ?

2. I am considering purchasing a 1974 30' Sea Ray Weekender with twin inboard/outboard sterndrive units, which I may like because this boat can easily be boat-fork-lift-truck lifted and easily stored on the readily available and less costly lower boat racks and also more easily and less costly trailered due to no marina lift $ costs or marina involvement, etc, however, I was wondering what any posters on here have to say about the pros and cons, advantages/disadvantages, potential problems, personal experiences, etc, of this 1974 30' Sea Ray Weekender with twin inboard/outboard sterndrive units ?

Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and time.

With kind regards,

mph

We have a few here in the Pacific Northwest with outdrives and if my memory serves me correctly they were 1974 models, I personally have never seen any later than 1974 in this model even though Sea Ray never changed the transom for the inboard style. Out drives are maintenance pigs other than that your savings on storage might help with maintenance costs?

Thank you for your reply "Velooce".

You seem to be a reliable source of information on the years 1974 to 1981 30' Sea Ray Weekender !!!

I have since located a listing of a year 1976 30' Sea Ray Weekender with twin inboard/outboard sterndrive units (I/O ' s) and it does appear from the photos of the transom in this listing that the years 1974 to 1981 30' Sea Ray Weekender`s hull was explicitly designed for the twin I/O sterdrive units.

Perhaps there is marine-grade-wood embeded inside the outward moulded fiberglass area in the lower transom to fasten the outdrives to more securely ??? . . .

I sure would appreciate hearing back from you or someone else soon whom knows for certain if this is correct ???

Would you (or someone) please briefly describe the proper maintenance procedures for these I/O sterndrive units ???

Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and time.

Kind Regards,

mph

Hi mph, I'm trying to understand why you care so much about how or why it was designed the way it is. What does it matter? I've drilled through my transom to add another bilge pump spout and it had to be about 4 inches thick, lots of glass and lots of wood, bullet-proof as they say.
With regard to I/O's vs. straight drives my only question would be how the weight is balanced. Are the fuel tanks mid-ship? My inboards have the motors at about 2 feet from the console and the fuel tanks are tucked in the back (against transom). I can tell from a distance how full my fuel tanks are just by the way it sits. Perhaps without lots of fuel the I/O model would have an issue for planing out.
With regard to trailering, I trailer mine twice a year from home to marina, about 120 miles (200km) each way. I can launch in and out probably quicker than most guys with 20' or less boats, but that's just me.
Good luck with your quest!

I know it has been a while since there was a post on this thread but I had a little input. I know of a '74 weekender with for 350 v-drives in it. Not many out there with this type of power. The boat is in the Mt. Clemens area of MI and on Lk St. Clair. It was the 4th boat of this model based on the serial number and is for sale. This was my families boat growing up and it was sold to the current owner 16-17 yrs ago. I loved that boat so much I bought a 1976 version of it last summer before i knew the '74 was for sale.

These are great boats and I will hold onto mine as long as possible. Good luck looking in your search and feel free to pm me with any questions. I actually know of a few other for sale in my area not in as good of shape too.

The 1974 is in Harrison Twp off the Clinton River. Behind Metro Beach to be exact.

My 76 actually has the straight drives in her but i know my father never had a problem with the v-drives in that '74. I live a few street over from it now so I get talking to the current owner quite a bit and he said besides regular upkeep he has not had to do anything to it since he bought it from my father 17 or so years ago. The boat always ran great. We would go to Cedar Point annually and did a trip up to the North Channel one summer.

The boat is in good shape. It could use a little cleaning up but for the most part is in great shape from what I can tell.

He redid the headliner in the cabin with materials from Sea Ray and it looks a lot nicer then the camel fur that was factory.

The teak is in nice shape and has been maintained.

The boat is not online that I know of, it is just word of mouth at this point.

I am not sure where it is winterized but I can put you in touch with him if you are interested.

BTW-

The only owner other then my father and the current owner was Peter Beauregard, the owner of Colony Marina in Algonac. I just remembered that.

The 30 foot weekenders of that era that did have i/os (which was common in the 80s) tended to weather vane around docks making them difficult to handle on windy days in tight quarters. With twins, there is a lot of weight back there making them sit a little bow high. They pretty much turned into the wind making for exciting times when the day was over.

I think the boat you are referring to can be seen on Yachtworld.com.

There is a similar one on yachtworld.com with the vdrives. It says it is for sale in New Baltimore but the photos are taken in Harrison Twp. That is a different boat from the one I am referring to but it is a nice boat. The interior looks real nice.

Good eye ghuskin, I had not seen that one and it gave me some ideas for updating the cabin. Thanks.
