I have a 1973 Searay 240 with twin 888, having some problems with my starboard trim unit. The out drive kicks up when the motor not running and the port side motor is engage. I Can pull up on the out drive and it will come up then slowly go back down. Checked the fluid looks like water mixed with the hydraulic oil, bleeding the system did not work, My thought is the trim cylinders needs rebuilding any advice would be very helpful thanks

yes checked the hoses and nothing leaking from the manifold under the transom ring there still suspecting the trim cylinders

With your shifter in reverse, the cylinders should be hydraulically locked in down position. If it is still floating and you are making water, then cylinders would be the obvious problem.

Is it better to buy new ones are getting the rebuild kits ok

Break the rams down and inspect them to see if you can rebuild them. You might find the water intrusion has pitted the inside of the rams.Inspect them and you will have your answer.

the rebuild kits come with new cylinder tubes i will braek them down this weekend to see how bad they are

rebuilt the cylinders they needed it. but i can still lift the overdrive up to easy the other outdrive3 is very hard to move up , and air seems to be getting into the lines or they need bleeding but i thought they are self purging, what am i missing, is it in the pump there are no leeks anywhere, so i am confused about the whole thing. I have to do it myself because the boat shop will not look at a boat this old

it was the rams had to save up and buy new ones now am up and running perfectly
