1973 220 shift/gear problem

hi, i just got a 1973 220 sea ray. she firer up nice, but when i put her in gear she stop. and in reverse, the gear start to grind. can you please help me.:huh:

What outdrive and engine do you have?

hi david, mercruiser the outdive is a 260 stern drives, and the engine is a ford(i think) merury marine 188 H.P. i hope that help.
