Last weekend, we rescued the old family boat from a wooded grave in northern michigan. She's a 1972 SRV 190 Outbroad. Motor and throttle controls are missing. I would like to replace the motor but, remember starting problems from day one. Question to all of you -- was there a starting problem with the 115 hp Mercury or was it my lack of experience? I'm contacting Mercury to determine if 1972 was a problem year and if so, were there any upgrades in the following years that used the exact same motor.

The older 115s had a distributer and points. They are very picky and hard to work on. You would be better off to find a newer engine.

I'm looking for a 140 hp outboard and throttle controls. Is there an advantage to a standard shaft vs. long shaft motor? I do not know the shaft length originally on the motor. Does any know if the engine tag indicates a standard ro long shaft?
