Just replaced impeller and all seals in outdrive. had engine running in large container of water. started and ran fine first time, shut down after 2 to 3 minutes. checked for leaks found none. Restarted engine, sounded like it was hydra-locked, shut down checked, pulled plugs had water in cylinders. slight water oil mixture in oil. Note I just installed the engine which was in good shape. Where do I start to look for cause of water in the cylinders? Head gasket, manifolds, waterpump.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I would start in the manifolds where they join your elbows. The joints on the exhaust are usally the weakest link. I don't know if your year engine has these, but on my engine the elbows have a hex bolt right at the top. If you remove this bolt and run the engines they will spew out water if you have a breach.

If its a salt water engine and you have not replaced all exhaust components in the last 3-5 years you need to replace them. If you are in fresh water you could go longer. Start there!

Thanks for responding. I did check with the person I bought the engine from and yes it had been used in salt water. Is it possible the manifold is corroded or rusted thru, allowing water to be sucked into the intake ports, I installed the newer engine with the manifold that came on the engine without removing and inspecting the manifold for corrosion or rust. This could be a easy fix, if this is the cause. I am open to suggestions.
Thanks MIke
